Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ireland has a lot of areas where natural sand dunes occur, particularly on the Atlantic battered coast of Clare.

In recent years these dunes have been subject to violent winter storms and, in some places, have been damaged by both wind erosion and human footfall. To protect these fantastic places there has been a policy of replanting Marram Grass to ensure the health and regeneration of the dune and also in some cases fences of natural hardwood and zig-zag piles have been erected to restrict the flow of movement through at-risk areas.

Thanks MrsD007 :) It's a lovely spot on the edge of Killone lake, there's a beautifully maintained Holy Well to the East and North of the Abbey down by the lake which is worth a look if you're visiting. The Abbey is actually in the grounds of the Newhall Estate but there is a public right of way for folks to visit.

Thanks Patrick 74, it's a handy one to visit :) I'd been meaning to go see it for ages and finally got the chance at the weekend. Here's a panorama of the overall structure. The weir splits the Shannon coming out of Lough Derg into the head race for Ardnacrusha (left) and the natural Shannon river course (right).

Looks great....I love stuff like that, looks like a good spot for a long exposure.Had a look on google
maps and its in Obrienbridge..I was there before painting those riverside apartments and the weir is just a few minutes walk
    past them.Thanks again.

Might as well round this out with a couple of pictures from the culvert that carries the River Blackwater under the head race canal near Ardnacrusha:

    DSC_0975_694_zps32a3dfaa.jpg

And a couple from the Errina-Plassey canal - this was the Shannon navigation used to bypass the falls at Doonass before the Ardnacrusha hydroscheme was built. It is no longer navigable by boat but you can walk most of it:

Anyone any news on the restoration of the 'Falls Hotel' water turbine electricity generator which was supposed to be happening?

No news, other than preliminary site works are well under way (and can be clearly seen from the bar!). No idea on project schedule / plans.

One of the top Denil pass section at Ennistymon

A couple from inside the hydroelectric plant tucked away at the side of the falls. It was dark, damp and I had no tripod so these are high ISO specials:

    C6EEE3F66F0D42C883A52ED7DFF1E70D-0000363792-0003483525-00640L-56B0228714A64B4D844EF0F98DDD9AF0.jpg

It does appear to have spat out the turbine

A long exposure from Parteen weir - fairly lively up there with all the sluice gates open!

The shot of the generator room at the falls brings back memories, the then owner Mr Woods showed it to me, all spick and span and all of it working perfectly to supply the hotel with electricity...

First time was 1965 and again in 1967, I'm pretty sure it was working well into the 70s....

In 1967 there was a small hovercraft there too....

I always thought that was part of the hydro plant! Is the square construction behind that part of the denil pass as well? How do the fish get up to the start of your photo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭Stellaluna

I used to think it was part of the Hydro plant as well! The square construction is a resting pool put in between Denil sections. From what I can tell, the fish have to find the Denil pass at the bottom of the falls that bypasses the hydro plant, then there's a sluice to negotiate before finding their way to the upper Denil pass, the top section of which is in the photograph. It seems like a bit of an obstacle course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 806 ✭✭✭Jim Martin

A few years ago, the owner/s of The Falls Hotel said he/they were going to restore the hydro-electric plant but I suppose the money ran out. Pity!
