Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi folks.

Recently our downstairs toilet has started to smell every so often. Its horrible sewer smell. It flushes fine. The oulet pipe is at the back and runs 90 degrees into the ground. I have read that the seal may have weathered and needs replacing. Would this be an easy fix?

If the "multi" seal is perished the toilet will need to be removed to replace it.
If it's perished where enters the floor, silicone sealant might solve the problem.

How old is the system? If its new enough, the main sewerage pipe may be blocked/backed up some way from your outlet, the toilet may be flushing OK but the solid wastage is sitting in the main pipe somewhere down the line...so you're getting fumes coming up the toilet whenever it flushes...

Can you open a man hole cover to check if the waste water is running away freely?

You can usually free such blockages with a water hose and/or rods etc....

It is about 5 years old. I've checked the manhole and the water is running free. I'm going to get a plumber in to have a look.

Get a tube of Tec-7 and reseal all around the multiwick(the flexible rubber seal around the pans outlet)-that should prevent the sewer gasses escaping. Or, If you are handy, release the pan, pull it forward and stick in a new multiwick.

It might not be the Toilet where the smell is coming from. Have you had a look at the Wash Hand Basin? Although this should be on a separate line trapped inside & perhaps outside, it may be connected to the same line as the Toilet.

If it is not used regularly, the internal trap may have dried up and just needs refilling. Or where the waste pipe enters the floor might need sealing as mentioned above.

Yup, I was going to say similar, or the trap on the basin is empty from induced siphonage when the wc is flushed, the water maybe getting drawn out from the bore of water leaving the bowl, is there a soil vent pipe nearby?

I reckon this is more of the problem. Its either the toilet has become loose due to movement or either the basin waste has become loose or is not water sealed.

Hi, I have a terrible smell from my up stairs toilet. There is no blockage in the sewerage system, i have checked this numerous times. The sewerage waste pipe does not go outside and goes into the aj from under the ground. How is it possible to vent this pipe?

Is this your main bathroom or ensuite....

Do you use your ensuite shower.

Do you use your main bath in the bathroom.

Tell us as much information as possible,
