One of the posters on Mountview Road is a public meeting poster. The other one is an election poster. There are a few of them. I don't know who they're for or what party they're for but it's a man.

One is for Fianna Fail and another is for Sinn Fein. Both Sinn Fein candidates have supported local events and have been active in the area cant say much about the others apart from David Mcguiness up in the Corduff area.
One of the Sinn Fein posters have a public meeting leaflet stuck on them.

There's a David McGuinness poster up just at the roundabout in Mulhuddart beside the community centre and it has no public meeting sign on it. There's one or two Kieran Dennison posters up on the same stretch of road (Ladyswell Road) with public meeting signs on them.

    Ah ok.
I always referred to them as Castleknock GAA.

I think it's different names used for them depending on the estate, tbh.

I'm after seeing a load of Edward McManus posters go up in Castleknock when I was on the bus earlier.

When is the date from when they can put up the posters? Coppinger and the anti austerity alliance have littered the place this weekend with low hanging posters, a complete eyesore and that's just one set so far.

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,336 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

To be fair, they all have. It's a bloody disgrace that Fingal Council let their councillors and prospective councillors litter the place so far in advance of the election. And I'm not buying that crap about the public meetings either. I've seen plenty of posters where the detachable public meeting notice has already come off, presumably due to rain. The biggest offenders I've noticed for this so far have been David McGuinness and some Sinn Fein candidate, but they're not the only ones. If you're going to circumvent the law so blatantly, at least have enough cop on to ensure your stickers are weatherproof.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

All the new ones I saw today were blatant electioneering, no pretence of public meetings or any such notice, but they were literally on every lamppost, no attempts at trying to be discrete or anything.

23rd of April is the date,

AFAIK tomorrow is the first legal day. Mary Fitzpatrick election posters (not the public meeting ones) have been all over the city since Friday.

I'll be asking them why Ongar has not been taken in charge yet.

Department of the Environment on that link have the 23rd ?

I have decided that I am not voting for anyone who had their posters up early.
I know some had pieces of paper stapled to the posters but I have seen plenty of these posters where the paper came of due to wind or rain on Sunday.

I know that seems petty but if these people are flaunting the laws then I cant trust them.

Absolutely, particularly since some of those involved are existing councillors. Who do we report them to, themselves ?

There were a large number of Paul Murphy signs put up on Coolmine Road over the weekend. They are quite low on the poles and as far as I am concerned an eyesore and a danger. I'd love to see them banned.

I've had FF, FG, Labour and the Greens at the door so far in the last couple of months. I'm pleading with each of them to put up a set of pedestrian lights on the Porterstown Road at the Castleknock Hurling and Football Club pedestrian entrance. We shouldn't have to wait for a kid to be seriously injured or killed before such an obvious solution is provided.

There is nothing else I want from prospective councillors.

    Hi guys,

Have any of you noticed that Cllr. Kieran Dennison doesnt have any Fine Geal affiliation on his posters.

Its like he's convieniently forgot to mention it...

Not that he'd be getting my vote anyway but just wondering if anybody else copped it

I've asked him on Twitter about it but he hasnt been bothered to get back to me...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,005 ✭✭✭✭Toto Wolfcastle

I don't think it's petty either. The area has been looking really nice lately and now we have to deal with these eyesores for longer than is actually allowed. The Anti Austerity Alliance posters (no public meeting sign on them) are particularly bad. If anyone actually bothers to call to my house I'll be bringing it up.

    I'm bothered.

Though in fairness he's not the only one to have them up early. I'm bothered by them all. The current laws should be at least enforced. Better still, they should ban posters altogether. They're ugly.

Saw some of his tonight on the Snugborough Road extension...they have public meeting notices over the Fine Gael logo?? Noticeable after the rain. Once the public meeting part comes down the logo will be visible so relax ;)

Lots of SF posters on that road too...two on almost every pole, at least every second one at eye level. Fines a coming at them, the bottom edge has to be well above eye level, can't remember the specific measurement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,697 ✭✭✭ciaran76

Ongar Road last night had plenty of posters too I also noticed as I was jogging by them that the bottom of them were at my shoulder height.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 590 ✭✭✭Paulownia

I'm pissed off looking at all the posters from people saying they are going to single handedly end the recession, create jobs, provide housing at 'affordable' prices etc when we know it is all claptrap and once elected they do nothing of the kind and even if they wanted to it is impossible

Fair play, and keep reporting them too, they are a blight. As for the chancers holding 'public meetings' over the last two months about non-specific issues just in order to get a few sneaky election posters up early, they should be prosecuted.

Here's a little guidance from our friends at the Dept of the Environment

    Road Safety Law

    Q. Where can posters be erected so they do not cause a disruption to road users?

    A. The Road Traffic Acts contain requirements in relation to maintaining clear lines of sight for road users which may impact on where posters can be placed, e.g. not on road signs, at traffic junctions or on roundabouts where they may cause road safety risks. It is an offence to erect any sign or notice that makes a traffic sign less visible to road users (Road Traffic Act 1961, Section 95, Subsection 14). Those erecting posters should exercise extreme caution when on or near roadways and should be aware of their own and other road users physical safety, e.g. crossing busy roads, obstructing footpaths, parking of vehicles etc. For more information, check with the Roads section of your local authority.

But they can't even do anything about it if they wanted to with the best will in the world, they're just going to be local councillors.

A mate has asked Ruth Coppinger about her posters being up early on her facebook page, she seems to have selective reading and so far has refused to even acknowledge his questions. She misses the irony by posting about how Sean Fitzpatrick 'got off' last week when she's blatantly contravening the law herself.

    edit:She since replied,
The erection of some election posters 24 hours early by some supporters hardly ranks as a crime. It's hardly litter either.

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,336 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

A €150 fine for every poster erected before the 30 day limit would suggest she's wrong on both counts. It's almost as if she doesn't want people to vote for her. If a FF or FG politican made a statement like that she'd be one of the first people jumping up and down and screaming blue murder about it. Hipocrisy is great, isn't it?

I really want Mary Martin to come to my door or to meet her at the supermarket or somewhere. Independent only because she didn't get a FF nomination and she has the cheek to use a patronising tag line on her posters "Come on nmBan, vote for women". Well actually I'll vote for who the hell I want and gender has nothing to do with it!!

    Couldn't believe I seen that tag line..unbelievable .

What does she think we are in the 1950s.

Unbelievable how out of touch she is

Just on a side note. It looks like the by-election will be also on May 23rd.
It won't be official until next Wednesday.

    http://www.independent.ie/opinion/columnists/shane-coleman/five-possible-byelections-this-year-should-throw-plenty-of-spice-into-the-coalition-mix-30209467.html

The biggest issue here is, if it is called Wednesday, anyone on the local election register will not be able to remove themselves from the local register if running for the by-election, even though they may not actually campaign in the local elections.

It would be an idea that the register be kept open until April 31st and allow candidates the opportunity to remove themselves from one or the other and help the electorate clear up the obvious confusion that will come with three different ballot papers.

The Dail resumes Wednesday and that's when it's predicated to be called.

A three week by-election campaign - for a seat in the Dail. Unusual.

I doubt it, as there is literally no where to put them.

I was heading down the Navan rd in to the city last night and noticed countless of them on traffic signs etc. It's those polls that the authorities really don't take lightly. They are impediments to drivers.

I doubt it, as there is literally no where to put them.

Second that. The sight over the bridge from the Clonsilla Road to Riverwood is laughable, Every piece of lamppost real estate has been eaten up with many of the posters (FF in particular) down @ eye level. A precedent has certainly been set this year in terms of posters-per-pole ratio....

Can't we not just outlaw these posters? I mean, they don't actually inform anybody but are all over the place.

Surely the digital age we should be moving away from the old practice. There should be some allowed, but I would rather a number of posters on each road letting people know about upcoming elections and where to find information about candidates.

I'd say the only way to outlaw it is to ban it totally. They inform of nothing other than name and face recognition - it's a human thing.

I don't know of a party or candidate who doesn't use them.

Again, to stop it would require legislation and beefier by-laws.

Oh I dunno, they are very useful with an A4 page slapped onto them informing us of public meetings, to get in ahead of the poster moratorium, which from a passing car reads like

    Joe Bloggs, Non - Party

Public Meeting on the Irish Economy - What the hell happened?

There have been signs for a plant sale in Castleknock (in one of the schools I think) up for couple of weeks and one of them has now been half covered by an election poster. I can't remember whose poster it is but if you're going to litter the poles with posters at least have a bit of respect for those who were there before you.

I guess it just shows the greed some of these policiticans have, littering everywhere with their information free mugshots, ignoring everybody's junk mail signs by posting more mugshots in our door. I know nothing about any of my local Tds, only what they look like and the fancy cars they drive.

What would you do for an 87k salary??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

I doubt you're seeing any photos, or getting any junk, from your local TD. And most of the people you do see aren't even politicians at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,463 ✭✭✭Kiwi_knock

I would love to get leaflets to see what my politicians have done but we only get a leaflet from Varadkar every few months. Will not be giving a vote to any sitting councillor due to the fact they have not kept their constituents informed.

So far there is 15 confirmed candidates in Castleknock.
3 for FG (Eithne Loftus, Ted Leddy and Henry Minogue),
3 for FF (Mags Murray, Edward MacManus, and Jack Chambers),
2 for the Anti-Austerity Alliance (Matt Waine and Sandra Kavanagh),
    1 for SF (Natalie Treacy),
    1 for Labour (John Walsh),
1 for the Greens (Roderic O'Gorman),
1 for People before Profit (Memet Uludag),
1 for Direct Democracy Ireland (Robert Long),
1 running for the Women of Ireland (Mary Martin),
    1 independent (TJ Clare).
