Hi folks, what is the difference between a builder's transformer (big yellow thing covered in dust) and a domestic transformer? Can a builder's one be used to power a US appliance 110v? Thanks in advance.

No difference, you will need to get an adaptor to change from the 2+E round plug to the 2 flat bladed US plug.
