General thread for any discussion on the Irish orals (beginning around the 13th of April I think).

How's everyone set for theirs? :pac:

One question I have - for the sliochts do we choose from sliochts that are given out to schools (different ones every year) or is it just from whatever ones we've been doing in the book ("An dTuigeann Tú")? I always thought we'd get new sliochts a week or two before the orals but now I'm not sure.

PS: Here's a handy online Irish dictionary incase anyone wants it: :D

Bricking it..! We've very little done..!

Nope the sliochts stay the same. You tell the examiner the numbers you did (eg. 1 go dti 6 or 1, 5, 7, 8 agus 14) and then they'll ask you to read 1.

We did nothing last year (worst Irish teacher ever) but this year we've had a class every week for it. I'm happy enough did really well in my mock oral, just hope I don't get too complacent. Ooh and I like speaking Irish, so that's a bonus!

Nope, if they ask me about the Irish policy though I should be able to waffle a bit and say I think it's awful because it'll be bad for the language. I'm planning on talking about the Irish language a bit anyway 'cause I'll be saying Irish is my favourite subject (honestly too!). :D

Wow, fair play if its your favourite subject, you must be really good at it!
Irish and languages in general have never been my strong point!!
I'm also a nervous wreck so ill be going into my orals scared as hell!!

I dunno, I'm ceart go leor I guess. :D Got a B2 in the mock hoping for an A1 though so I've got a bit of work to do.

Somehow I'm good at languages (well except English...). I'll be fierce nervous as well my legs were actually shaking for a few minutes after only a mock oral! Hopefully the nerves will calm down though 'cause I'm going to be one of the first going in. And if I'm lucky the one(s) ahead of me will be brutal so I look good. :pac:

hey don't worry too much about it, just have a few sentences, say something like:

níl a lán eolas agam faoin sin ach
chuala mé ar an nuacht aréir gur fhuair 28000 daoine bás. ceapaim gur timpiste uafásach é an tsunami. Anois tá ar an iomarca daoine dídean a fháil sna scoileanna agus halla, tá an trua agam dóibh. Chomh maith le sin bhuail an tsunami le staisiún nuclaíocht agus anois tá troiblóid ann anois an staisiún nuclaíocht, ní thuigim cad atá ag tarlu ann i ndairíre ach tá súil agam go mbeidh gach rud ceart go leor. measaim go droch rud é fuinneamh nuclaíocht agus tá rudaí níos fearr againn sa domhain chun leicreachas a fháil. is féidir linn na tonntracha, an ghrian and an ghaoth a úsáid. tá na rudaí sin níos sabhailte agus tá siad maith don timpeallacht.

i just did that off the top of my head so i dunno maybe its not any good.

as for fine gael just be like:

bhuel ceapaim go bhfuil a lan dochas ag baint leis an rialtas nua. tá siad ag iarraidh fadhb na tíre a réiteadh agus tá súil agam go dtarlóidh sé sin. tá post an deacair acu mar tá a lán iasachtaí ag eireann anois. (its hard to write about this cos a lot is your own opinion)

anyway hope this kinda helps :)

    Had my french today.
So now I'm all focus on the Irish.
And there is a slight possibility that I'll be at a Westlife concert the night before at the other side of the country :pac: But shur, that'll give me something to chat about :)

I'm graaaand with the basics. The only things getting me are the abstract topics. God, so much to learn. And sadly, I actually have to learn it all, every single sentence. I've spent most of my life learning irish yet I can't string a sentence together on my own, off the top of my head*. What a waste of 9/10 years.

*Well maybe "tá mé ag dul go dtí an siopa" but I doubt I'd be using that in an oral situation :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,757 ✭✭✭richieffff

Had a mock last week and well a side from the lack of proper sentences and misunderstanding from me I still got 53% without a rap of study and mines inn the morning yay!

Ah sure it'll be grand  I can do the sliacht fairly well

Did my oral today. Got Sliocht 2, read it perfectly apart from stuttering on a sentence, I think she knew it was from nervousness though.

I was kind of surprised at how basic she kept the topics, at first I was worried that she didn't think I was up to scratch, but now I think it was maybe because I talked so much! I couldn't shut up, I gave it all I got. Briathar saors, modh coinniollachs, the whole thing. Got asked on siblings, school, subjects, hobbies, school rules, the town, problems and solutions, and what I want to do after school.

I've my French tomorrow. Will be very nervous - going in second too. But shure at least it'll be over with. Kind of looking forward to the Irish one now! :pac: Will be shaking like a leaf though no matter how prepared I am. At least I can waffle really well in Irish!

I assume you can't bring in An dTuigeann Tu because it's got the pronounciations. My examiner had a copy of the sliochts but on the safe side find a copy of the sliochts without the annotations and photocopy them onto sheets. They must not be marked.

I'm freaking out about Irish :( I'm so unprepared and we've done nothing all year and my teacher refused to do oral work with us today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16 anonomousangel

I had mine yesterday, I was the last person to go in all day so I was terrified that I was gonna get pushed back until the morning and have to spend another evening worrying about it! But in general I was happy enough, the examiner was really lovely, but she asked me a good few things that I hadn't prepared. Talking to people, she seems to have gone out of her way to get us to answer in improvised ways rather than using learned of phrases, but I don't know if that was just the preference of the person I got.

I don't think this is right. Everyone in my class read from An dTuigeann Tu, and my book had both mine and my sister's notes on it, but my teacher didn't say I had to rub it out or anything like that.

You can. You can even type your own out or have it written out phonetically.

You definitely can. I had mine today, & I have all the 'ch's highlighted, and pronunciations written above certain words. Our teacher has alwys told us we're allowed to!

    Apparently so.
I know for my mock, I had almost every word written in phonetically above the text. I'm not sure if you have to have the text too but I've been told than you can have it like that if you need to.

I had mine today. It went quite well I think. My examiner was lovely, clear and easy to talk with.

I did Sliocht 3 and got asked the following

    Where do you live?
Talk to me about your family, where do you originate from?.
What do you think of your area?
Are there any social problems in your area?
What do you want to do after the LC?
Where do you want to go after the LC (As in for a holiday)?
    What are your past times?
Who is your favourite artist? - I said MJ and it turned out that my examiner was also an MJ fan. We talked for a few minutes about This is It, the concert and the film and how I had tickets for the concert e.t.c.
Do you have any interest in the news and world affairs? - I said yes
What do you think of Libya and the Middle East? - I talked a bit about agoidí and fadhbanna na meanoirthear.
What do you think of the current government, are they doing a good job?
What do you think of the current Taoiseach, is he doing better than Brian Cowen?
Finally, the conversation turned to cars somehow and I talked a bit about how I just got my Learner's permit and how I plan on getting lessons this summer.

It sort of feels anti-climatic now. It really is over-hyped.

    Now... Francais!

I had my french last Monday and I was 3rd. The examiner commented that the standard in our school was the highest shes ever examined and apparently she has been doing it a long time.

However, I have my Irish Oral next Monday. I got an A2 in my mock one so I'm not too worried about it. Irish is one of my strongest subjects so I feel I should be aiming for the full marks. (I always get 30/30 in my sliocht.)

Because we only have 12 minutes or so to show off as best we can, I was wondering do you have any AMAZING nathanna cainte that I could include in discussing myself and my family, instead of the commonly used boring things. I want to be different and impress them from the beginning. I need this 150 marks and my teacher has told me that I can definitely get it and she's not an easy woman to impress.

    Thanks

Irish Oral done a few day's ago was way too easy!

    All the usual questions with,

    Few slightly tricky questions;
    • Internet , do I use it.
    • What I do on it.
    • Do I download songs.
    • Problems with strange people on the internet.
    • What way I would do to help people if I won alot of money.
    • Do I have my drivers licence already? (seems very topical)
Got a bit cheeky then and asked him a few questions.
    • He said he was from Cork , I asked him to recommend some accommodation.
    • Asked him his favourite football team while we were talking about sport.
    • I also heard japan got asked alot from people before me, I didn't want a hard question on it so I asked him ,does he think the nuclear danger could spread worldwide?

Bit of advice I put my phone on record before going into the oral room, have the whole conversation on phone let my Irish teacher hear it she was impressed, worth doing to be honest if your not interested in waiting until august to find out how you've done.

Was just wondering why did we talk for a good 3/4 minutes after he stopped the tape?

Why not? It's hardly going to give them an unfair advantage over anyone else.

Although I doubt the SEC would say yes if you asked them however. That said, if it's not mentioned then the examiner will never know.

Thanks for the reminder, my teacher would probably go through it but she'd mark it too easy. She gave me an A1 for my mock one (I hadn't done a tap for it, lead it completely the wrong way, was shaking like a leaf, awkward, and she gave me the impression some of my answers were way too short). Did another 'mock' one the other day with a different teacher who gave me a B2. I want an A1 overall but I'm glad she marked me properly.

I hope mine is as nice as the French one - she was always smiling, and super easy on the first ten (ie. me). :D

    Ah, bon chance!

Anyone think this will work? :D:p
    31743.likeroo.info/calling-your-irish-oral-examiner-a-ghr-for-extra-marks-.html

And what do ye think of my previous plan to answer the "conas atá tú" ceist using the módh coinnialach (and present tense)? I asked my teacher and she laughed and confirmed that it would probably lead to very hard questions straight away. I don't want that, I just want to bring it in as much as possible for more marks!

Just write out some things you could say about yourself in simple English and then translate it into Irish.
Eg I live in a small town. There are a few shops and a pub. = Tá mé i mo chonaí i mbaile beag. Tá cúpla siopaí ann agus teach tábhairne.

You can use focal.ie as a translator, and if you're worried about grammar you can ask your teacher, or another irish teacher to correct it for you. It's a bit late, though.

There should be sample passages of people talking in your book. If you have Díograis Nua, then it definitely is.
    Good Luck

Will make you wonder next year which student is actually taping you! :P
Just a little bit of added pressure:D .
You should really mix up the way you ask the questions for everybody, as teachers getting a hold of these recordings take down the hardest questions asked & give lists to students to learn off!

Example: Every student in my school was given the same internet related question which a teacher heard on the first day & from then on everyone else gave back a perfect answer!

I'm doing pass irish and honours french. My main problem is that I've just done the French oral on Thurs gone, and have my Irish on Tues coming - I'm here talking to myself and drifting into french as I speak that more naturally then irish (Thanks to my ****e Irish teacher who has done roughly -7% oral work over the two years in the LC)

Don't worry Dave, at the top table so no more actual exams to be done for me but if when listening over the tapes they hear the usual sounds that mobiles interfere with I'd say it'll be reported to the school. The teachers should check no mobiles going in. Also, it's a highly incompetant examiner who does not give different questions, none of my conversations are identical, bar those with very weak students. Best of luck to one and all!

Pretty sure that taping someone without their knowledge / permission is illegal.

Obviously, if you asked the examiner and they said that it was ok, that's different.

But sure you'll have that! :pac:

Some very useful phrases in this thread.

Oh and Sarah ... small request ... can you stick to the default font colour please? Setting a specific colour can be very annoying for those who use different skins / backgrounds. By sticking to the default colour the system handles these issues automatically, but it can't if you specify the colour font. Thanks.

Sure thing, sorry, didn't realise. Will do in the future.

I never heard of a student recording it before, is that allowed? I'm not doing them this year as am on maternity but usually do.

NO NO NO!!!! If your planning to record on your phone , if you bring your phone in it ****s up the signal thing on the examiners tape recoder thing! someone in my school stupidly brought their phone in even though our teacher warned us many times to not the examiner obviously knew then she almost got her test cancelled but the examiner was nice enough to let her re-do it . Dont do the stupid thing of bringing your phone in!!!

Had mine today. It went amazingly :D I love my examiner, he was so nice and made me feel at ease and had a little chat with me before :)
I got asked almost everything about me, family, area, hobbies, weekend, mornings (which I only studied in the past tense so I had to do a little switching but it worked out well). Turns out he likes astrology too and we had a little chat about our lunches. It was the weirdest Oral ever because it actually felt like a conversation.
