Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    In your case I think its the price. They're a great car but not an obvious choice.
    That said there aren't a lot of them about so someone actually looking for one won't be spoiled for choice.
    Donegal will put a lot of people off too, you're too far away from most of the country.

    The problem in Ireland is that it hasn't got enough doors. That kind of car would be seen as a family car here.
    Have a look at other models in 3 and 5 door form and you will see a good price difference between them.

    I happen to think it's a fair price for a decent car, though.

    Just one thing that would put me off your ad.

    Email 'Honda' and call 'Seller'.

    Think it looks more legit when a seller isn't afraid to put down their name.

    If I were you I would also change the number plates or least blur them out on the photo. The sporty plates would give the impression to any buyer that your a boy racer pulling handbrake turns in it.

    For the masses, yes.

    If you actually live in Dublin (as a lot of the country do) its just not on to drive a 'bog' (non Dublin) reg.

    It is here after TN/TS although driving one through Thurles on a match day Dublin vs (Clare I think it was) your car will be kicked sitting in traffic.

    Unfortunately OP, the above note about mileage is very normal of the car buying public in this country. Even though 112k miles is hardly excessive for a 9 year old diesel car, it is a mental challenge for a lot of Irish buyers. One of the reasons why clocking continues to be big business here.

    Nice enough car. Interior a bit dirty looking. I don't think they're original alloys btw, never seen that style on ep shape civic before. I'd advertise at 4.5k and hope to get at least 4k. Mileage ain't too bad at all.

    DL = dogs life to people outside donegal.

    I have to be honest and say that DL puts me off cars in general. But it's mostly because of a combination of two things.

    Firstly, when I was buying my first car, i was looking at a DL and i was advised (on here) strongly to stay away. So that's my first impression of DL and it just sticks with me for some reason.

    Secondly, any DLs I see in real life, 95% of them are cars that have been toyed with excessively. Always look like they've had the bollocks 'boy racered' out of them. There's a DL car around the corner from where I live, and between the excessive lowering, silly stickers and spoiler all coming together to make me almost feel angry looking at it, it just makes me think there's certain 'type' of person or car associated with DL regs.


    (that said, your car doesnt seem to have any of that silly nonsense, and actually looks really well, in my opinion).

    (I don't know the first thing about civics though, so I'm not sure if I'm comparing apples and oranges).

    I'm not sure that anyone looking for a Civic would prefer a petrol engine or not, though? (I'd assume most will invariably be the boy racer types and will opt for petrol when given the choice, and lower sized engine for insruance purposes)?

    Nice car! Hondas are very popular in this country for some reason. Civics even more so. And then diesels and then in Donegal! Still your asking price needs to be taken down by a few grand ;)

    5k for a 9 year old Civic / Golf you might have got in 2006, but not now :)

    Just so you know OP, according to the stats I have here, your mileage is above the average (About ~112,600 miles is the average) and your price is on the high side of the average (€4750 is the average private price while if you factor dealers, that drops to €4698) Note, they are asking, not actual sale prices.

    My dataset for this specific car is quite small though, so take that with a pinch of salt.

    - You're in Donegal which as noted is too far away for most people + there's the "DL image" of it being raced/skangered to an inch of its life

    As the ad is, there's nothing wrong with it.
    However there are a few things that will cause me to automatically ignore and an ad and click next and blurred number plates is one of them. Others would be txt speak, excessive bad grammar (i.e. deliberately so, Ghettospeak), abuse and bad attitude and not enough details.
    It reeks of seller hiding something that might come up on a reg check, so I don't want to have to phone the seller and go through a lot of hassle till I get the plates and THEN find a problem with it.

    TL;DR
    Blurred plates, NEXT!

    IMH

    - Clean the Interior properly i can see the dirt in the seats.
    - Go out and buy proper legal printed reg plates they will make the 'DL' look less 'DL' if that makes sense.
    - Dont take pictures on an empty road somewhere. Find a nice back drop for example a local landmark like a manor home or a castle residents. It makes the car feel more recongisable and not as if its on the side of the road.

    And lastly adjust your price. Is is immediately overpriced to the tune of 1.5K

    Motor tax on a 1.7 is hardly excessive! €636 for the year or €53 a month. Most people probably spend that on a night out.

    Yeah, very hard to explain the popularity of vw tdi of the same age if "no one" will pay 636 for an economical diesel.

    Everybody on this forum seems to forget that people need to update their cars anyway for other reasons and at that point, it is worth considering the tax cost. Don't forget people did still change their cars before we ever had the cheaper tax.
    I can't see myself getting into something with very low tax but comparing something like a 07 gs 450h v a 08 model, its a no brainer.

    In context its not that excessive (compared to say a pre-2008 2L+). Obviously its extortionate overall, and thats not even getting into the farce of the dual taxation system, but in context its slightly higher tax on an older cheaper car, compared to slightly lower tax on a far more expensive post-2008 car.

    It depends on the car. You see people overlooking a 2007 model of a car in favour of the "cheap tax" 2008 model, when in reality there is little difference between the cars and they are ultimately spending a couple of grand more in an effort to save maybe €200-€300 a year.

    The handiest thing for you OP to do is do a search on Donedeal. Refine your search to cars priced €4500 - €5500 and above 2005 and see the cars available for sale, then ask yourself would you buy a 3dr civic with over 110k miles on it when you could get an 07 saloon with less miles, better spec and not considered a boy racers car, which being honest, what your car looks like.

    Drop your price to €3500 which is more realistic and be prepared to take €3000. A three door car has a limited market and it being diesel limits that market further when the 1.4 petrol model is the preferred choice for people wanting that size and style car.

    Thank you all for your opinions. Just to pick up on a few things mentioned - DL reg - I was aware of the stigma surrounding the DL reg, from talking to dealers in Dublin they say its more to do with the conditions of the roads in Donegal which is understandable. (They're appalling). Its kinda funny as the car has spent the last 4years in Dublin.
    Alloys: The car was imported from England and they are genuine Honda alloys.
    Mileage: The mileage is just about average for a car its age. Its also a diesel so it'll go on for quite a bit longer.
    Tax: The tax for this car is €570.
    Service History: The car had FHSH until 2009. My local garage did the servicing since then.
    Price: According to car valuations and looking at similar cars online she might be overpriced.

    Thanks for all your comments. I'll make a few adjustments to my ad and hopefully it'll do the trick.
