Claiming a soundbite as their own

I stick on Q102 some afternoons in work to appease the people I share an office with as I usually have TXFM on until about 3.

One thing I've noticed about their celebrity news is they say stuff like 'Tom Cruise spoke to Q102 about blah blah blah...' when it's obvious he really didn't but they took it from some other news outlet/Youtube.

Is this disingenuous or should I really find something else to be mildly annoyed about?

This is common practice for all media. You will often read articles in usually tabloid newspapers where they say they have spoken to a footballer when in reality they have taken the quotes from somewhere else. This is usually exposed when someone connected with Liverpool has supposedly done an interview with the Sun.

Stations receive audio of celebs, sports stars etc that are prepared specially to be used as if original to a particular station from PR companies and agencies. These can range from one or more short clips right up to full interviews (questions would be supplied for a presenter/reporter to record and edit into the interview). Been happeneing for years and is especially prevalent in the States.

As has been said, it's an old trick, going back at least 30 years that I know of. Always pay attention to the way the 'interview' is announced. Careful picking of weasel words make it sound as if it's an exclusive, but it's not.

To be fair some of these are exclusive. Stations would attend red carpet events and talk to these stars directly and one on one. (not all stations, and not all red carpet events) Therefore they're speaking exclusively to them.

The star probably said the same thing to 10 other people on the way up the red carpet but none the less, they spoke to said station. Some of them are just soundbite clips that are sent around the houses which shouldn't really be put down as "exclusive" and more often than not, in my experience, wouldn't be read as "exclusive" more "speaking at the launch of..." or "so and so says"
