I really can't afford to go, but Marina and the Diamonds...so tempting

One of my friends asked me to ask, he graduated a few years back and isn't doing a masters or anything, can he apply for tickets?

Amazing. I was gutted that Marina didn't announce any Irish dates for her new tour so this works out great for me.

Yep. Students, staff and graduates can buy tickets.

Lineup seems to be getting worse every year. That's really weak in my opinion.

Whatever Marina and the Diamonds song they played in the trailer was sufficiently annoying to turn me off buying a ticket. Haven't heard of most of the other bands cos I'm not with it, are they any good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 484 ✭✭brownacid

The line up is ****, I had heard of marina and the diamonds by name only and same with teh dead presidents, although I think the dead presidents played last year which is why I would have heard the name.

The only act I have heard anything by is prof green who is in all honesty ****e, I dont remember seeing him last year. Ive never heard of the "headline" friendly fires and from a quick youtube they dont seem to have any "ballesque" songs. The line up is seriously lacking an act that has drunken anthems that has everyone singing along to and they charge 80 quid for teh night, what a ****ing rip.

Hopefully ents don;t re-seign the contract with mcd and get someone like pod or aiken to take over on a 5 year basis rather than the current 10. 10 years and the promoter seems to have gotten complacent. I half way expected a decent line up this year in an attempt my mcd to ensure the contract is renewed, oh well.

This is the first time the Trinity Ball has had an act I'm even vaguely interested in (I love Marina and the Diamonds), but 80 euro for one artist? Not happening.

Can you buy a ticket with a debit card online?

Online sales are by Paypal but you can pay by card over the phone

Debating whether or not to go, line up seems a little better than last year but eighty euro is a lot to shell out..

Just hop on stage with Trinity Orchestra and whip out a triangle or something. Thats my plan ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 182 ✭✭Ahoyhoy

Trinity Orchestra are going to be the best of this night I'd say. It should really have been included in the trailer (or did I not spot it?). Also Marina & the Diamonds. And it always costs a lot for only one or two good acts in my experience (although last year was probably an exception, it was a brilliant line up).

The money is mostly worth it just for the experience of wandering around Trinity in fancy clothes at 4am while delightfully pissed. You do have to know how to get the alcohol levels just right though, I learned that after first year when I spent seventy odd quid on a night I couldn't remember.

Yeah getting dolled up is one of the best bits! I'd say there were a good few sore heads and lost memories last year, everyone around me at Jessie J was well and truly out of it :p

Disappointed with the line up to be honest. Very weak. While I like the bant of the ball I think I could really do with the money this year and this line up has made the decision even easier!

Have to say i'm happy with the line up, erol alkan is quality, will put on a hell of a set!

Edit: Got it open now, nvm! :)

Thats an awful line up. Oh how the might Trinity Ball has fallen from its high graces. But of course the prices havent.

F*ck you Ents. You useless gits. Electro DJ Sh*te.

Very very bad line-up, at most, two notable acts. For 80euros it really isn't worth it.

Very disappointed and poor form from Ents'

Is there any archive of past line-ups? It would be great to compare. I suspect every year is "the worst ever", but I may be wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,252 ✭✭✭Africa

This is unquestionably the worst I have ever seen. Last year sucked ballz too, but this year is the worst Ive ever, ever seen.

I clearly have the wrong taste in music for this - none of those line-ups seem particularly good to me! :o:pac:

I got tickets this year though, because I figured you have to go at least once. I'm in third year and there's a fair chance I'll have either my final Spanish oral exam or my dissertation interview - or both - the week after the ball next year (and because my surname starts with B, I'd definitely be on the Monday if they were that week). So yeah, this is the year I'll go :P

I think its more laziness and blinkers on for the Ents officers who 'book' this (I use that cause MCD control the hand...), and yes, every year its pretty poor. But this is by far the worst. Poor guys who queued in the rain yesterday. So not worth it, and I think Ents should be ashamed of that price!

Why are they "Poor guys" for queuing up? They queued up because they wanted to go. Why is it so hard to understand that, even though you don't like the line-up, the majority clearly do.

I agree about the price. Considering the night takes in something like 600,000 for ticket sales, and out of this has to pay for acts, setup, MCD's margin etc. plus has to still generate money for the SU, CSC, DUCAC, they're hardly going to get Jay Z or Kanye West now will they?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,626 ✭✭✭timmywex

People are forgetting to understand the price of production of the ball.

Roughly €550,000 from Ticket Sales, its fair to say, without breaking down actual costs, heres a rough breakdown of how money is spent!

Out of this, the acts need to be paid for, their transport and accommodation, and their riders for the back stage area.

Stages need to be constructed, marquees erected, fencing rented, all of which carry a considerable cost, just go to Trinity any day before the ball and look at the work put into erecting them.

Equipment then needs to be rented aswell, from truck full's of sound systems, and lighting, to portaloo's, they all need to be provided and are not cheap, add to this the cost of wiring and setting each up, and the time involved in this.

I think its fair to say that the above 3 take a huge amount of money, just in themselves.

Now, add further to this, the cost of security, medical personnel and stewards (which TCD students get the option to do), legal fee's(event license applications etc). The money that MCD charge(they need to pay the staff obviously), the money given to the 5 capitated college bodies and all other miscellaneous costs, there's loads but im not going into them!

This is all excluding bar set up and fee's associated, so lets presume the pouring license covers all that cost, as well as staff associated with the bar and the security that work on the bar, and let it, and the food vendors rent, cover the post event clean up (TCD has to be left in perfect condition following the ball, including broken things repaired).

The ball is expensive to run and produce. There is nothing to be ashamed of in that price, the line up the ball attracts, is top class. Sure, you could have a bigger headline act, but at the expense of having the rest of the line up being completely unknown amateurs, and either way, everyone wont be pleased, balance is best and trying to keep everyone happy with a wide range of music and genres!

This is the first time the Trinity Ball has had an act I'm even vaguely interested in (I love Marina and the Diamonds), but 80 euro for one artist? Not happening.

Ball Acts are generally people that are playing over here anyway, it being a private event means it wouldn't interfere with normal gigs. She might be playing her own gig, have a look.

Line-up is expectedly terrible IMO, but I'm sure there'll be a few thousand drunk happy people there, so it's serving its purpose.

@timmywex - Castlepalooza is €74 for a whole weekend, and Body & Soul is €99 for a whole weekend. Both festivals have a similar capacity (i.e. ticket sales/income), and offer a lot more for the price, the line-up being a small part of that. Trinity Ball offers nothing more than a few bare-minimum facilities, and a weak line-up, who they (I'd guess) get good prices for as many usually are playing the Ball as a second Dublin date in a weekend. There are loads of people in Trinity who could organize a better ball without help of MCD, for a cheaper price. Then the Ball might actually be something to do with Trinity, not just another way for MCD to make money from their Trinity Ents lapdogs.

Them 2 events are totally different, go look at the acts as an example, totally different vibe and targetting a different audience, and their not private parties held in the middle of Dublin, in a fully functioning college campus!

Some people think the ball line up is weak, others good, its impossible to please everyone? The ball lineup takes about a third of the revenue from ticket sales, and for your info, only professor green is playing that weekend in Dublin aswell, all the others are coming for the event, which means flights/hotel costs have to be covered aswell!

There isnt anyone in Trinity that would be capable of organizing something on the scale of Trinity Ball, to the success it is

Bollocks line-up as usual. Only things even remotely worth seeing are Friendly Fires and Erol Alkan.

Why don't they ever book decent dance acts any more? 2007 they had Booka Shade, Erol Alkan, Hot Chip, Boys Noize, Dr. Lektroluv, it was great, it was music you actually dance to and have a laugh. Back then I remember people outside Trinity would get jealous when I'd tell them about the line-up. Now, if I was going, I'd be embarrassed to tell anyone for fear of being laughed at.

I think it's general concensus that the line up is sh*te. Everyone's saying it...
However its the crack that's to be had at the ball, thats why people are going... Its a huge piss up simple as with a bit of poor music thrown in.

Ive never been and dont plan on this year, what are the setlists like? Full setlists or what?

Wouldnt have minded seeing Ian Brown and Babyshambles back in '05 all the same !!

The 'vibe' or audience in no way changes the finances of the event...And being a private party if anything would make it a lot cheaper, licensing & insurance is much easier for private events. I guarantee MCD are laughing at the thousands of people paying crazy prices for a extremely budget event.

If so many people think it's more to do with the event than the music, then it'd be nice to see some effort put into the atmosphere, more than horrible tents and takeaway vans.

MCD don't pay the catering units to be there, the caterers pay MCD for the right to serve food. I know for the likes of oxegen it costs the caterers anywhere from 2000 to 10000 to be there for the weekend depending on the size of teh unit and what they are selling. The only reason there are caterers at the ball is that teh guys who own those vans, are big enough to have bought the rights for every event MCD have for the year. They dont make much money at the ball and certainly dont get paid by mcd.

The queue or the abrakebabra van at the ball is ALWAYS longer than the queue for the bar. I'd be pissed if there wasn't a van there, and I'm not alone in that.
I agree it's pricey for the event, but in fairness, it could be the UCD ball.....
