Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Nice strut brace on the red E11, looking for one of those for a while now.
TTE or TRD strut brace - rare as hen's teeth. The other one (on black car) is more common factory G6 brace, nearly the same as the ones used in E9 and E10 GTIs (and they fit E11). Got one myself for 10 pounds off ebay a while ago. :)
[...] I have a standard ae111 3 point brace free to a good home if it's any use.

    Go for it CJ!

I've been reading this thread and I love it! I am a german car enthusiast, so BMW, Mercs and VAGs really are my thing.
Anyways, I was wondering what do you thing about this Merc: cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/automatic-mercedes-1998-beautiful-car-inside-out/10571166

I know it's from an era when Mercedes still made good quality products and it has a nice retro look to it now.

I also have a huge amount of respect when I see an older car like that still looking fresh and driven daily, but is it really all that? It looks very basic, hub caps, cloth seats and a dash more spartan that a mk4 golf.

I know it could run until the end of time and maybe it's just my young minded opinion but it's like it totally missed the point of why people buy Mercedes.

Very few bangernomics cars are ever going to be "all that" tbh. It looks great and appears to be a mechanically sound, well-maintained example of a very comfortable way to get around.

Were I looking for a German car I'd be inclined to go for something like that with a bit more character than the ubiquitous 10 year old beamers that I wouldn't have as much faith in mechanically and consider as bland as your average modern Korean car (Not a popular opinion on this forum I'm sure but taste is what it is).

I like those old mercs because of their quality but tbh they don't really have anymore character than an old beamer. They are arguably a classier car than a beamer of that era however.

A beamer of that era would probably have as much character, most of the ones we see here tend to be from a few years later and less interesting IMO. They're great cars but just so common on our roads, and their design language so "samey" across their range that I can't see them as being any more interesting than a Corolla.

It's typical of Mercs from that time, they were usually poorly specced as the cost of extras was ridiculous. Mercs were old school, you didn't buy one for buttons and flashing lights, you got one for its quality. I'd rathehr that than a newer one full of gizmos that are permanently going wrong. Anyway, the less stuff you have, the less stuff that can break.

That Merc is a total bargain, look after it and you can sell it in one, two or three years for the same money, if not more. Parts for them are still very cheap, especially if sourced abroad.

Plus you can put that in any car park and it will stand out way more than a 10 year old A4, 3 series etc.

And all parts are still available brand new from Mercedes-Benz (at reasonable enough prices in general). I don't think any other mass car manufacturer offers this service on 20+ year old cars.

British Parts UK carry most of the old S-Type Jaaag stuff, though admittedly some of their prices bring a tear to the eye. Some Ford/Motorcraft parts-bin stuff is identical as well, so that's not so bad. I got a five-way heater valve via Amazon a couple of years back for €100, as opposed to a shade over €300 from Castle Bromwich. :pac:

But yes, the only other car that would properly interest me these days would be a proper old late '80s/early '90s Mercedes. They deliver the correct brick-shathoose-riding-on-butter driving experience with minimal crap.

this won't last long, good beginners car with tax and test. Could probably get your money back once you're done with it.

I get the impression it was in the middle of a 3 car pile up. That front bumper doesn't belong to it, it's colour co-ordinated on an otherwise un-co-ordinated car. Also that rear bumper and bootlid belong on a 01-02 model (the second facelift of the k11) that car is a first facelift. So it's had the front and rear replaced at some point.

On principle it's a good deal but i'd say that particular car is ropey as ****.

Could also be as simple as normal "upgrade" to freshen up the looks.

Call me a synic but it screams of a dodgy repair. On the front, even the reg plate holder which should be black is painted. It screams of someone too lazy to mask off. And if they were so looks conscious, why would they beat a spurious blade into the contoured wiper arm on the rear, i'd also question why they didn't use the facelift tail lights if they were swapping parts to freshen the looks up.

It could still be a good little car for pottering around town, don't get me wrong, it could just be a pain in the ass with water leaking into the boot and the smell of that stagnant water etc and these are prone to crossmember corrosion at the best of times, so after a slap i'd be extra cautious. Wouldn't be worth it for the risk imo.

Is there a recent change of ownership on it I wonder?

Motoring doesn't come any cheaper. Extra bonus being you don't get to sit in a Micra or the like for this money.

But will you not be able to get insurance from the few insurers who are still giving quotes?

I have a 1992 primera 1.6l my insurance last year went up to €510 ( FBD) I got a quote this year for over €900, they brought it down to €886. I couldn't get insurance off of anybody else. I changed cars & insurance companies this week. I got insured on my new 2004 motor for €400

    What was your original premium?
In fairness, a lot of premia are going up in last months, and seem to be continuing, e.g.:
    http://www.independent.ie/business/personal-finance/latest-news/motor-insurance-premiums-to-rise-by-another-25pc-31530709.html

If you simply couldn't get a quote, however, that's perhaps a new phenomenon.

Bangernomics by the letter of the law but utter dung. Its not in the rules that it has to be dependable but surely its in the spirit of Bangernomics that we wouldn't suggest cars that breakdown more often than a 55 year old separated woman drinking G&T at the bottom of a stairs in her wealthy divorced friends house party at 4 in the morning.

It's this attitude that it'll breakdown all the time that makes cars like this so cheap. That's exactly what the average buyer is going to think so they run out and buy a golf the same age for 50% more at least. That Pug is spectacular value for money, lovely spec and personally I love the colour combination.

If you can find a similarly spec car for the same price with as much test and as clean looking I'll be very very impressed!

Agreed but it Fails badly in the tax band, think it's over a grand for it, so more luxury barge. Be lucky to get any interest at that rate.

It's a lot easier to act like that though when you don't strictly "need" the car to be reliable.

I'm sure that 607 could give years of hassle free driving but if I strictly needed a dependable car I reckon i'd be giving it a wide berth.

I think "the man down the pub" will have the last laugh in this case tbh. Those yokes are buckets of cr@p and are poorly built. You'd nearly get over the faults though if they were good to drive but they ain't that either tbh.

What's that supposed to mean? Everybody needs their car to be reliable, surely?

Thankfully nearly all cars are very reliable these days. They start every morning, they go from A to B without breaking down.

Thankfully nearly all cars are very reliable these days. They start every morning, they go from A to B without breaking down.

It means that if you depend on your car, if you need to know your car will start, say if you work a long way from home or only have one family car etc, you need a car that pretty much promises no drama.

If I was a single, healthy man living less than a 2 or 3 miles from work for example I wouldn't mind driving a risky bangernomics car like the 607, because some cars are ****ter than others and i'd say that car could be a heart breaker, but if I wasn't relying on the car I probably wouldn't mind as much if it threw up the occasional problem in exchange for driving a cheap swanky car. plenty of modern cars are far from consistantly reliable in my experience.

I'm not trying to draw a direct comparison to the 607, but my neighbour has a 307 1.6hdi the last 5 years or more for example, and they take reasonable care of it. I'm actually sick of the amount of times they call in looking for a jump or a push start and it's definitely had at least one new battery in that timeframe, it's definitely been recovered via tow truck from outside their house no less than 3 times that i've seen. It's an unreliable piece of junk.

That looks like a great example to be fair. Bargin to boot (no pun intended).
Supposed to be very reliable but thirsty.
A good test drive should see if there are any suspension issues. Make sure it turns well (lock to lock) the drive shafts could be worn out, after all there is 150k miles on it.
    Anyway - more here;
