Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. I wasnt aware the PC beta is out now. I thought tomorrow

The recommended spec for Star Wars Battlefront are an i5 6600, GTX970/R9 290, with 16gb RAM

Do I smell another Arkham Knight? They're utterly ridiculous spec sheets.

No, I think they've just massively over-inflated the specs for no good reason, game appears to run fine on hardware.

Wolfenstein was another game that 'recommended' an i7, but benchmarks showed that there is no difference between i3, i5 and i7 in the game at all.

Don't know why games do it, but they do it all the time.

Speaking of (wolfenstein), when's the next instalment of that prequel due? Looking forward to it!

Maybe, if they recommend an i3, and someone does't get 60FPS @ Ultra settings with one they are liable to be sued for false advertisement?
So they put out specs that will 100% play the game.

Can someone please offer an explanation on what the hell happened to my computer? Friday last week we had a power cut in our house. When the power finally returned my computer would not power back on.

    - I tried to power it on at my desk using two different cables
    - I moved my PC to the kitchen and used two different cables
    - I tried to start the PSU using the paperclip method

No matter what there was absolutely no power coming through. There was no lights appearing on the motherboard, no signal that the PSU was getting any power. Today I was about to remove the PSU for an RMA but decided to try powering it on again, just in case... And it turned on first time. I can't think of any logical explanation behind this at all.

As of now there has been no issues with power all day. My monitor does randomly go black but is not losing power. There is a crackling in my earphones. Those two I can't figure out either.

I have a problem like this.

Shut down. Come back a minute/week/month later, power on, fine.
Shut down, remove AC from wall for 1 second, reconnect. No POST. Wait 12hrs, try again, posts fine.

Every time theres a power cut(its now surge protected) I cant use it for 8-12hrs. Pain in me hole. Suspected the PSU, replaced it, still happens. Gotta be the mobo. Its just really weird.

PS: anyone noticed an issue with boards last post links not linking to the actual last post in the past few days? Its as if their DB isn't sync'd.

It's been acting very strangely the last few days. It's been doing the above along with several other buggy things the last few days for me. Seems to be improving slowly though so I assume they're aware of it.

    Digi's Benchmarks

i5 and i3 comparing a 950 vs an R9 290, few amonalies of the i3 getting better mins than the i5, but thats likely just how I was moving.

Didn't have many new and/or graphically intensive games so I did what I could

Guys, I am kind of in a spot where I need laptop. Twist is I still need it to be somewhat capable to run lower requirement games.
At pc specialist or what they called, have a very decent custom laptops. I played a bit with it and managed to get this:
    15inch 1080p
    New i5 quadcore
    8gb ram
500hdd ( will put ssd separately as they just overpriced from them)
    960m
    No Os
Comes to 866eu, which is kind of really good value.

Now mainly I don't play high end games anymore. It's mainly eve online, world of tanks, heroes of the storm, diablo etc.
I would like to keep it around 700eu and lower, so downgrade would scare me. Something like 940m or 950m would do the job too. Problem is that pc specialist lower spec laptops use older cpus and come out slower spec and almost same price as the one I listed above.

So guys, if you would have 700eu max to blow on laptop, what would you get? Considering my requirements?
Building a second pc not an option anymore as I do need portability factor now.

I use Gunnars alright. Thought they were gimmicky bull**** but a friend recommended them and for about two years now using them.

I've started to leave them off recently but I guess it can kinda be the point, you dont need to use them all the time. I found since using them I don't get as tired when gaming for long stretches and my eyes don't water as much as they used too.

Never suffered with headaches or anything like that, but would get kinda tired/watery eyes after long sessions. Take some time to get used to but after a few days everything looks really weird when you dont use them :D

Really good support service too. Mine arrived damaged by the courier (box was bashed up badly) and Gunnar replaced them and send new pair out by express. Told me to keep the broken pair. So I've still got the broken pair, but its a spare set of lenses and I guess if I was arsed fixing them a spare pair. Without it even being their felt, they sent me some extra bits and bobs just for the "dissapointment" Was very impressed

Lads, I'm in a bit of a bind.

With Fallout 4 coming out, and the monster specs (for a given definition of monster) it will require, I'm going to need to spend some cash.

Honestly, which do you think would be the better option? Shell out €350 odd on a GTX 970, or just buy a damn PS4?

I mainly use my PC these days as a Reddit/boards/Netflix machine, but I do the odd bit of gaming. Last purchase was Shadow of Mordor, and it can run it reasonably well on low/mid settings. I want to be able to get right into Fallout 4, just get immersed into it for a while. I use the PC in my sitting room, hooked up to a TV, 32inch LG job, that's about 4 or 5 years old.

I'd be going from a Sapphire HD 6800 1GB, but I don't know which would be my best bet.

I know, I know, PC master race, and all that jazz, but given my options, what would you do?

Real hd screen? Seems decent spec for the price. Honestly for laptops pc specialist are not bad at all. I spec one up that cost me 1200, for an Msi one with lower spec was costing me 1400.

I just YouTube similar specs and looked at a few games I'd be interested in.

You could pick a lower spec card, like a 750Ti for about €120 will should comfortably handle FO4. It's not going to take a 970 to run it.

No point picking up a 970 unless you're planning on doing a good hack of gaming

I thought the Old Blood was deadly, actually preferred it to The New Order!

As for the card upgrade if your PC is 5 years old, you might want to say what CPU you have first because that could be a bad bottleneck dependent on what it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

Is the GTX750Ti much of an upgrade over a GTX460 1gb? Found out I'll be starting a PhD in feb meaning I'll be able to do a full rig rebuild around then. I was looking at GTX950s, now I'm thinking get the cheapest upgrade to tide over gaming until then.

If the 750 isn't a huge upgrade I might just go for a 950 and sell it on later.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Yeah it's a lot better. I was using a 750Ti just until today (while waiting for my new 390X :D) and playing Battlefield 4 at high settings 1080P at 60fps.

It's a stellar budget card, Nvidia killed AMD stone-dead in the sub €150 market with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

I don't quite think I'll get those returns on it.... I only have a measly FX6300 to pair it with. Hence the overall big upgrade in the future :p I reckon it'll match your 750Ti / G3220 rig, however that performs.

Is it really worth getting anything right now seeing as you're going to be building a new PC in 4 months. Seems a little wasteful to buy something you aren't carrying over.

Decent processor, SSD for the price. Really just be using to watch matches, browse, youtube the odd film and to vpn to my own desktop when away. Seems like a decent price. There a bit limited but always a work around :)

That's one side of it alright... but those 4 months will have a LOT of gaming crammed into them. I wouldn't mind being able to boost up the settings a bit, enjoy it while I can :o

Also the old rig isn't just going to vanish... while it won't be carried over, the FX6300/GTX750Ti rig (for arguments sake) will still be kept.

I'd keep the 6300 until you can get an i3

No plans to touch the 6300 until a full rebuild. Will probably go for an i5 then.

This one has a decent processor. 1600 on cpu benchmark which is pretty decent for the price. Pc world has them so going to test it their tomorrow to see what its like b4 buying off amazon. Also going to test the VPN and there's currently a few video apps so hopefully should be grand.

6300 is a Dam good processor. Unless your gaming at 144 hz then honestly don't see the need for Intel if you have a fx6300 allready. It will play any game you throw at it very well. Yes Intel is better but have a look at gaming cpu benchmarks before making your mind up as not as a lot of games are only slightly behind Intel. If you have the cash go for it but for an extra 10 fps and maybe a 10 fps lower drop than Intel is it really wort it at 60 hz? My answer is no as will still be over the 60 hz
    http://www.techspot.com/review/979-battlefield-hardline-benchmarks/page5.html
    http://www.techspot.com/review/1006-the-witcher-3-benchmarks/page5.html
    http://www.techspot.com/review/670-metro-last-light-performance/page6.html
Intel significantly better in far cry but still over the magical 60 hz number.
    http://www.techspot.com/review/917-far-cry-4-benchmarks/page5.html
Get something like an r9 280x or a gtx 960 even second hand for 130-140 hand and you will have an excellent gaming rig. You don't need to spend a fortune on it as you have the core components allready.

Would I recommend i5 over fx 6300 if buying a new processor, absolutely. No doubt its the better processor. Would I recommend someone upgrading to an i5 with an fx 6300 allready playing at 60 hz? No wtf is the point?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

The FX6300 is still fine, but there are some games which AMD has a much rougher time in compared to Intel - the massive advantage of 4th gen i3/2nd gen i5+ is that there are no games in which you can't rely on rock solid performance - but you just cannot say that about the Fx6300 or even the 8350.

It's easy to find benchmarks which show the FX6300/6350 or FX8320/8350 struggling to reach 55-60fps - and sometimes, even losing to €50 Intel processors. Also for example, that BF Hardline Benchmark is single player, which is a pointless benchmark. If you look at CPU charts for multiplayer the i3 and i5 are much better, similar average framerates but the minimum's are much better. People tend to focus way too much on average framerates, when minimums are a much better indication.

That is why I consider the FX line totally redundant for gamers. It's the same reason I consider the G3258K a pointless buy as well. It runs great in 80% of games, but for that 20%, it just isn't reliable at all. I had a G3258 heavily overclocked with a GTX980 for testing and in most games it was stellar, but in an odd few the average frames were solid but the minimums were terrible. And when that happens, even if its only one or two games, the processor instantly becomes redundant.

So yes, I would say that someone looking to upgrade from an Fx6300 to a 4th or 5th gen i5 is making a good choice, for both now and the future.

    Sorry guys.

I'm running the following, along with the Sapphire 6870.

    i5 2400
    H61M motherboard
    8GB RAM
    450W Super Flower
wrapped up in a Xigmatek Asgard 2 (or 3, can't quite remember which one, it's a big, black case.)

It's perfectly fine then, still up at the higher end of the CPU charts for the latest games. :)

Up to you as to how much you want to spend on Fallout 4 really, but I would expect a GTX960 2GB at around €200 to run the game at 1080P high-ultra settings perfectly.

I get where you're coming from though, I've been looking forward for FO4 since finishing FO3 - I bought a 390X 8GB recently and it was mostly with FO4 in mind. I plan playing the game for 100's of hours and it's money well spent in my opinion! Even though I don't play many other games, mostly BF4 but that runs grand on far cheaper cards.

You could also consider second hand cards, something like a 2GB GTX680 or 3GB HD7970 are still really good cards and sells for about €140 second hand.

    Cheers guys.

It's a decent rig, and it's taken what I can throw at it since I got it, but I've just gotten it into my head I need a beast of an upgrade to run FO4.

As Terror Firmer said, I've been silently giddy since FO4 was announced. A good offline game that can suck me in for hours is what I need right now, and I just want to be able to run the thing in the way it's meant to look.

I'd never think of a second hand card, I'm a bit of a clown that way. Does anyone have an suggestions (or cards of their own they are shifting?) €350 is really my top end budget, but around €200 would be ideal.

Managed to fix my AV receiver yesterday, it's been borked for over a year, so sound is sorted, looking forward to the visual is the next thing to get right. A new TV would be class, but not in the budget right now. I've fallen in love with those curved 4K screens, was in Currys the other day for the first time in AGES, and saw one in the flesh. They look realer than real life, I was stunned!

It'll be fine. It's not a processor I'd want paired with a GTX970 or R9 390 personally but anything below that really is perfectly fine, the 750Ti will limit you before the 6300 does realistically. The 212 is a good buy though because you can carry that over down the line, great cooler.

    Cheers lads.
Will try to see if I cam build a microatx pc for 600eu as I can't get a decent laptop for gaming. Looks like market is filled with very cheap crap or very expensive power houses. No middle ground at all.

So as it's micro pc I would be able just to move around from my bedroom to misses house and keep monitor at her place.

Skyline i3 paired with mini 960 would be decent for 1080p gaming?

You'd be pulling 30fps at Ultra at the very minimum.

Yeah, can't really beat the price either.

What's the best bang for buck in storage these days?

Last time it came up (just did that upgrade round myself), people were recommending WD Red/Blues for HDD and for SDD, Samsung (highest performance/cost, Crucial (good trade off between the two), or Sandisk(cheap).

What sort of hardware would be required for 3 U2515Hs in Nvidia Surround? I've a GTX 780 and I was considering picking up another second hand (with a new PSU also to power it!), would that be enough for most stuff over 3 monitors with lowered settings?

Those 780s only have 3GBs VRAM. I don't think that would be enough for 3 monitors at 1440p.

What sort of graphics setup would I be looking at then? I'd rather stick with Nvidia though, had too many issues with AMD in the past.

You would be pushing about 25% more pixels than a single 4k display. Your looking at 2 x flagship cards I reckon, 980ti's or amd furies. Unless you only play csgo or something! The 4k benchmarks will give you a guide
