Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Where to get a stereo headunit painted?

    I have a headunit from a later model of my car that I want to fit to my car. The trouble is that the colour of the fascia changed significantly bewteen MYs. Getting the right shade of paint will be one thing, but painting the thing professionally will be the bigger problem.

    Would anyone around Dublin do this kind of work? Do ICE specialists do this sort of thing?

    Painting it is going to look terrible, won't be possible to match the colour up.

    Others have managed to do it (don't know anyone in Ireland who has done it) so that it looks ok and installing the newer HU without painting it to match the fascia would look worse. I'm not expecting a perfect match, I am more concerned that there is no paint on the buttons and screen etc.

    Can you suggest anyone who would do this job?

    What kind of finish should it have? Is it a coloured plastic surface or a painted surface you are trying to match?

    There are some very good people who repair holes in car dashes etc that im sure could do a very good job on something like this. uk mostly though.

    It looks painted. Matching fascia surrounds are readily available on e-bay (I currently have an aftermarket HU fitted with surround to make it fit the dash-the colour is a very good match and it is not OEM)

    Sounds ideal-could you point me in the direction of any? I would be able to send over both HUs so that they could match them up (assuming they would offer to deal with me by mail)

    Honestly, it'd be a disaster to do. A lot of the head units are screen printed, because where there's lettering, usually the lettering on buttons is illuminated, and if you paint, you'll be painting over that, loosing the illumination, and it would just look terrible.

    The buttons are sort of separate to the faceplate- see the 2nd stereo in this picture -and the only writing on the area of the newer stereo I want painted (the grey) is a MP3 logo which I don't care about. I would have thought it possible to do with an aerosol as long as you could paint around the buttons and the screen.

    You can try it, but it'll always look like it's been done afterwards. Plus, unless you've some method of masking deep down inside where the buttons push into, you'll always end up with bits of overspray that become visible when you push buttons, etc.

    It should be easy to remove that silver face from radio for painting. If you could get the right paint(difficult to get the right type of low sheen/mat finish required Id say), a suitable primer and careful coating with a spray can, you could do a good job.
    I personally wouldnt go anywhere near the inside of my car with paint though.
    Could you not get the complete surround from a scrap car to match the radio?

    I’m willing to try and fail at this-I have an aftermarket HU fitted at the moment and also have the original HU, so if this goes wrong, I’m no worse off-the newer HU is pretty much useless to me at the moment. The front panel of the stereo can be removed (screwed on to the HU at the moment), but I’m not sure if the panel itself can be split apart any further.

    Unfortunately, the whole centre console would have to be replaced if I wanted to do this, as well as a cover that conceals the ash tray and cigar lighter. The car itself isn’t that common and so finding the parts in Ireland would be nearly impossible and it would be hard enough in the UK as well.
