Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I would like to take up fishing as a hobby, but haven't a clue where to start with equipment.
I don't want to buy new just in case I get bored after a short while and I spent all that money.
Can anybody suggest what I should get for starting off?

I live very close to the Grand Canal in Sallins and I know there is some good fishing of tench, roach, rud & hybrids down there so we're only looking at small fish to get me interested in the sport.

Someday, I'd like to move up to the bigger game fish like pike, but one step at a time.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Tom

the bend at sallins is indeed a fine place to fish for bream, hybrids and tench.
its tricky though cos there is a 15 foot pool to cast into, and above that is a load of electrical wires.

i seem to remember a cheap box set offered in LIDL....

they seem to pole fish there a lot for that reason of the cables...

i think the electrical wires are insulated...
its a very good place though,
i was fishing there once, two 4.5lbs tench and 3 bream in a couple of hgours...
its hard work casting there though, so i wouldnt recommend it for a novice...
    anyway..
there is a fishing tackle shop in lucan thatll sort you out for beginners gear...
its beside the motorbike shop on the road out of lucan towards liffey valley.

you are really entering a bad time of year for coarse fishing though..
its going to be pike fishing only pretty soon....

    Thanks for the info

do I need to get a license?

I wouldn't mind going out to see a bit of pike fishing. Saw Matty Hayes and his mate Brownie on TV last week landin those big boys. Looks like good fun.

yeah its good fun, but be prepared to put in hours in the freezing cold, and not catch anything!
you dont need a licence for coarse fishing, only for salmon - and some trout stuff...
