Personally, I'd stick with good 'ol Buy and Sell or some kind of local trader mag.
I bought a banger for a few hundred squid late last year just to keep me going. NCT is up in february so i'll let it on to the scrappie then.

go to an auction, great value to be had there now. if you can get a toyota with NCT on it, mid/late '90s, especially the carina E 1.6/1.8, big car cheap to run, corolla if you want smaller engine, and no probs getting rid of it after! make sure it hasnt been a taxi tho!

Thats interesting considering the clocks on these fiestas only go to 99,999. For a car that's between 14 and 18 years old, you could have no confidence in the mileage unless it's a very rare example with that's been passed down through a family or a rarer still example with verifyable history. Anyway at that end of the market, mileage means nothing, it's all about condition. Give it a thorough look over and test drive. Forget about the cosmetic stuff and concentrate on how it drives, listen for any strange noises, etc... Good tyres, current NCT and a few months tax are all bonuses.
