Interesting read and hopefully the DOT give money to improve the network to be competitive

Problem for IE is that while they can close lines they can't avoid some inspection and maintenance costs for closed lines unless a way is found to divest them into a separate agency.

Went a little too crazy spending on un-needed DMUs maybe? Especially when the Mark 3s were still serviceable?

Privatisation would fix this, as well as prompt a re-expansion of the network. But it seems in order to do that, a change in the country's constitution would be needed.

If the money wasn't spent on DMU's it would of being spent on extra staff and a lot more fuel. All in all I think the costs would be more less the same either way.

The deficiencies of the Mark 3s are well known and long discussed herein. Dealing with them would not have cheap or optional.
