Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It's just a curiosity. Ignoring the LUAS, and any double tracking on existing lines, or reopening of previously closed lines. when was the last bit of 'Green field' to rail line project completed and where?

Dublin Port - new track to container depot adjacent to Tara Mines terminal.

Ballinacourty is the one you are thinking of. The spur was a new line linking to the former Mallow line which was relaid for the plant and there was a railway order made for it's laying. Tara Mines was a relaid line and although the site is large there wasn't any new route added

Off the head, the last actual new line to be built was Lavistown Loop in 1994 or Kyles turn at Limerick Junction in 1967. Dublin Port was an extension of an existing siding but it is a new line in the sense that it never existed before.

For an actual line of any significant scale then you are going back to Castlecomer and Wolfhill, both of which were planned during WW1 but were only fully opened in the early 1920's. Passenger wise, Castleblaney to Keady opened in 1911 while Rosslare to Waterford was opened in 1906. I'm sure JD or others may add to or correct these suggestions as well.

I presume you're ignoring B na M lines as well??

Wonder was the Silvermines branch built before or after Ballinacourty?

Basically, the Irish state hasn't built a single new passenger route in the entirety of its existence? Pathetic.

    Why do you say that?

There was a very extensive network already built - why would brand new lines be built (aside from in Dublin)?

I think that you are nearly right. The Dargan Bridge section opened in November 1994. The Blythefield Curve into Great Victoria Street opened in September 1995.

There was a new section of line constructed to divert around the new Killkenny ring road in the 2000's. It was approx 1100m long. The rail design was carried out by a UK consultant.
