Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Google Maps Navigator?

Has anyone here got Google Maps Navigator working in Ireland? Is it even possible? I updated to my google maps app yesterday but when I try to get turn by turn directions, it says it is not available.

Is it simply checking where I am and blocking it? Anyone know is it possible to get around this?

Or does anyone know of another free satnav for android?

    Thanks

I'm on a rooted Hero and I got navigator to work by using google maps and just inputting the directions. Navigator started up then. Worked ok. Comparable to the sat-nav in the car, even if both of them did work out different routes (Google wanted to take more back roads, the sat-nav more main roads) but each of them about the same distance away.

hmmm...just thinking through the possible reasons it will not work for me:

    1. Being in Ireland
    2. Being in Cork :D
    3. Running it on a Tattoo
    4. Running it on 1.6 although it should support 1.6
    5. Phone not rooted.
    6. New version of Maps not installed via market.
    ...

    Could be any of them...

apparently google has enabled this in the UK as well

havent tested here in Ireland yet..

Well when I tried it out I was in the midlands so don't think Cork should be an issue.

It's probably the fact you are on 1.6 and google haven't offically released navigator for here yet then. Like I said, mine was on a rooted phone running 2.1.

DOH...It did not work yesterday...I just tried it again now and in it went no problem. Turn-by-turn directions given correctly without being blocked.
    Ah well...unnecessary thread :D

I literally just saw something on my twitter feed saying that google has offically released navigator for the UK and Ireland today, and that it should work on 1.6 upwards.

    Good news everybody!

LMAO...now that is a coincidence. Must try it out on the drive home today and see how it behaves when I go a different route to what it suggests.

Eats through battery power though. If it is any good I will have to get a car charger.

It's working now on my Nexus One, time to try and get the car dock now!

Working here too. (G1 running HTC Legend rom)
    I must say nice

Nice one been waiting for this.

Lack of paid apps on the droid in Ireland is a bit of a pain in the ass to be honest. Well that and the lack of some free apps on the Legend.

Iv searched for "google maps" on andrid marketplace andcant seem ofind google mps navigator, am idoing something wrong?

Iv a HTC Desire running 2.1

I tried it on my tattoo on the trip home today. I took a different route to the suggest one and the rerouting was pretty quick both times. Not bad at all when you consider it is free.

I couldn't get it from the marketplace either. I downloaded the latest apk file from another source (PM me if you want the link) and used the htc sync to install it.
That does mean I wont get updates through the marketplace, but it will prob never appear on the marketplace here for me as it is a system application which would only be updated when HTC update the software which will probably be never.

Try navigating to this from your phone:

Nexus one comes preloaded with maps.
    If you have maps:
open the app and search for an address
when it shows on the map touch the address pointer and you are taken to another screen with 4 tabs.
hit second tab with right turn arrow and then navigate
Thanks to Baza for posting this.

    Try rebooting your phone.
I was trying to figure out why i couldnt get it to work earlier and just rebooted.
    Worked straight away after.

It is free so I guess this site is not illegal...get Google Maps v4.1 with Navigation here:

    http://www.brothersoft.com/mobile/google-maps-for-mobile-download-4530.html

Make sure you download the correct file. Search the page for your phone type.
    Install it using HTC Sync.
I did it yesterday. I told me it was going to replace a system app (google maps) ans was it ok to proceed. I hit ok and it installed no problems on a Tattoo.
    Works fine.

    **UPDATE**
Read further on in thread on for another way of getting Navigator without using this method - only use this as a last resort.

If you don't have Google maps installed already do a search on Google for Google maps apk and install it using htc sync

    My maps is ver 4.0.0
To see navigation you need to get directions and then navigation will be one of the options.

Log on to a uk network provider like 3 and apply for a free sim by entering your details. I got two sims from 3 and took about a week. I just used a belfast postcode.

I managed to get the latest Google Maps installed on my Desire.

I opened Maps, when it opens I hit the Menu button.
The selected directions and plotted a route.
I plotted route with the car button selected.
Once the route came up I then I selected the Navigate option.
Google Maps then prompted me to download an update which turned out to be the Turn by Turn update.

    Works a treat for me.

OMG, that's it, I'm getting the Desire!! Full sat nav for free + everything else it already does makes it great value to me! Thanks to everyone for reporting that it works in Ireland. Probably go sim free as am worried about meteor's coverage. Hope the Volcano doesn't slow down the delevery ;o)

    Go Team!

Ps: It's back in stock on Meteor.ie!

Cheers for that, I downloaded & installed 4.1 on my Desire & it works fine, think it was 4.0 before. From reading other posts it looks like I might not even have had to do that but all working now anyway.

Has anyone got voice navigation on the HTC Desire? (I guess not since the phone itself doens't have speech recognition).

With the new Navigation update, it asked me to first install some speech component, but maybe that was just the automated voice that gives directions.

I tried it out this morning on the drive in to work, and it works really well.
The view tilts and zooms coming up to roundabouts etc, which is better than most satnav apps too. Colour me mightily impressed!

I followed Ludo's suggestion to grab it at this URL

Strangely I was just downloading something from the Market & it told me there was an update available for Google Maps! It looks like the same version I installed manually earlier (4.1.1).

It definitely didn't appear in the Market before for me.

Got my nexus in the states. It didnt show up as an update for me. I stuck a uk sim in it and it showed up straight away. Im very impressed with it. Now just give us google voice and paid app market and we will be happy! :) Like its kinda stupid that there are so many ways of getting around the paid app restriction in ireland that you would think they would just allow it to work here.

Does anyone know of any docks to mount the phone to the wind shield ala a dedicated sat nav device, only see a few clunky generic ones on Amazon!

Yeah some guys on the Google support pages complained yesterday that Maps wasn't showing up in the market for Ireland and one of the engineers said he would get it looked at.
