external memory thing

hi, a friend of a friend bought something that you can use like an external memory but can hook it up to a tv so you can choose what ever shows or movies you have downloaded on it. i haven't a clue of the proper name of the thing so looking for direction here!! also if anyone knows where i can get these would appreciate…
