Hi I've recently been offered a job for a large multinational as a manager
The problem is I once had an account with this company and I'll be honest I didn't pay my bill and my account was suspended
The bill was over 2000 euro

Would you take the job and hope they never notice or just decline the offer

I'm thinking decline to save the risk of them eventually coming across my account

I was in serious debt after being unemployed for a long time

    What sector are they in?

Is doubtful their accounts dept will ever find out where you work ?

How long ago was this? Was it written off?

Skeletons will always surface, could take it provided your home address is different or someone will match it up some day some how.

    It's possible they might eventually
I can hardly be honest with them and come out with it do you think
    No scrap that

It really depends when the debt was accrued and what state it's in now? Is it outstanding or with debt collectors? Recruitment and HR will probably have no link with sales/accounts so I think it's fairly miniscule especially in a large company

Would they have not done background checks before offering you the position, surely think one of the first things a company like that would check would be there own accounts before offering anyone employment

It's with debt collectors now.. I presume they did background checks but not sure what they involve

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,537 ✭✭✭worded

Is the dept still outstanding ?
    Just pay it off ?

Prob no link between accounts and hr

Company size / number of employees ?

If a small compnny they might twig if

    Just pay it off op

Even still an account that was defaulted on would still be on their records so as no further credit could issue to the account holder, plus as you prob know they would have only got a fraction of balance from the debt collector

One of the largest companies in the world however the dept I am to manage is specialising in debt collection and transactional risk

I could pay it off if I took the job and had a salary ! Looks like that's a no go then

Oh man I think it's back to the job search

If they've offered you the job take it and pay your debt.

    That's what I'd go with

Me too I'd just be mortified if or when it was noticed obviously it would take me a month or three to pay it back

Just do this. Firstly you're paying a debt that you should be paying.

If its paid off then there wont be a problem any longer.

Course but no point worrying about that. It might not get noticed and you can pay it back, and no one will be none the wiser. Even if it is noticed early on, just leave off the job on your CV when applying for others.

If you do take the job, I'd advise paying it back though as soon as you can. Loads of people have bad times financially, you can't let that rule the rest of your life though.

Take the job, save up to your bill and pay it back. It's a large company so unless someone specifically goes searching for you, I'd imagine no one will see it as the data they're probably dealing in will be huge.

if its a large multinational then 2k is a sum which would be written off as bad debt and forgotten about quickly enough

Take care he job, snake into their accounts...erase your debt.
    Say nothing!

Mod-note: I'm assuming that this suggestion was made as a joke. But just in case any humour-impaired people read it, taking this advice would be fraud. That's illegall Don't do it.

Take the job and pay the debt anonymously as " conscience money." Ever hear that expression? I haven't either - for decades!

Take the job. But change e-mail address, Paypal account, anything that may be linked to the debt, etc in case any of these are cross referenced.

Settle the debt with the debt collectors as soon as possible and make no reference to it unless it is raised by someone else. It's not as if you defrauded the company deliberately, you simply couldn't afford to pay.

If you want a career there, then pay the debt.

Maybe they offer jobs to all thier debtors as a way to get paid ?

    It's not a bad idea really ;-)

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,537 ✭✭✭worded

Those back ground checks may be for criminal convictions, double check you references etc

It's doubtful any company would check thier own bad debtors list.

How old is the debt as a matter of interest ?

If its a few years old doubtful anyone will put two and two together.

Also if you purposely defrauded are a chancer - tough

If you fell on bad times / were genuine , that happens

Take the job and pay it off as quickly as you can. If it does get found out just be honest, humans are reasonable creatures and appreciate honesty.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,490 ✭✭✭stefanovich

I would 'fess up and see if they still want you. At least you are showing that you are honest and not trying to conceal anything.

Take the job and pay off the debt, once it is gone it shouldn't ever be discovered. I don't think it is something that can be shared within the company anyway. Surely that would be a breach of data protection?

Ahh, no, I don't think that's quite how credit ratings work!

And it's not necessarily a data protection issue either, it depends on the T&C's of the original seller agreement that the OP agreed to.

OP, tbh I wouldn't take the job. You would be forever looking over your shoulder expecting someone to bring it up. Even if you do change every single bit of identification, because it was a seller account I'd expect they'd have some link to you somewhere. And if you try to make a career there or get promoted to be Someone Important, you can guarantee that someone will raise the issue.

Now I know jobs are scarce, but if you can reasonably get a job elsewhere, that is what I would do.
