Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Silent Violin?

Howdee all, just looking for some recommendations on a silent violin.

I have a beginners regular violin at the moment, but practicing it with anyone else around is a no no, as it sounds like a mangled cat!!

So, something with headphones that wouldn't annoy other folk would be a good solution for getting over the hump.

Obviously, online, there are basic ones from Harley Benton, Stagg etc.

I am also thinking of maybe ebay second hand? I just need the fiddle really.

No such thing as a "silent" violin! Even an electric one will still generate an amount of noise. I use a couple of clothes pegs, one on either side of the bridge, to mute the sound. You can buy a mute fairly cheap also. I've no time to search for you but there is a comparison between noise levels from a muted violin and electric ones and there is not much difference.
See how you get on with muting it and if that is a still a problem look into getting an electric.

Ah, I never knew you could buy a mute. I might look into that so.

I'll have a look online to compare.

Hi there, sorry to drag up an old thread but just wondering if you ever found a good mute for your violin? I'm trying to find a metal one in Ireland but all I can find are rubber ones which I don't think are supposed to be good. Saw them on Amazon but shipping and postage costs a fortune. Would appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction

No, I didn't get one. I did get an electric fiddle in the meantime, and while it's quieter than an acoustic one, it's not that quiet or silent.
