There's been a few posts on the "Freedom" list on this topic. You can pick the thread up from here:

A heads up to something I posted on the blog recently -- the Dept of Justice
is holding the 'first phase of its consultative process' on the proposed
three-year data retention bill this Monday at the Alexander Hotel in Dublin.
It begins at 3pm (ahahaha! lots of time for serious discussion then).
Speakers include the Minister, the dept of Communications, and -- just
guess! -- "An Garda Siochana on the contribution of data retention in the
    fight against crime."

Antoin has made the excellent suggestion that we ask Michael McDowell to cancel this meeting until proper notification has been given and people are in a more reasonable position to attend. Antoin's going to hand-deliver a message himself, and I'm going to lob a fax in in the morning. If you'd like to object to the haste with which this meeting has been organised, please contact Deputy McDowell and ask him to postpone it. You'll find contact details on his (rather outdated) website:

At this late stage, a fax would probably be the best method of contacting him. If you want more details, there's been a little more discussion on this issue on the FREEDOM list today.

    Thanks,

Data Retention in Ireland - what's going on?

Ireland is drafting new laws that will make it mandatory for ISPs and telephone companies to retain information about Internet and telephone usage, and make it available to law enforcement. This legislation has been in progress for some months, but there has been no consultation.

Act now to make sure this legislation takes full account of the privacy rights of Internet users.
