Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I know that people all round the world use abalone shells (like mother-of-pearl) for jewellery, as well as for furniture inlay, guitar fret-boards, etc.

We have a bunch of abalone shells, essentially as a by-product of our abalone farm, which we'd be happy to provide (yes, for free) to anyone who could put them to good use. Otherwise, they'd just be fertilizing our flower-beds.

If anyone feels like experimenting with abalone shell as a raw material for jewellery, please visit www.abalone.ie and use the contact details there to get in touch.

good to see the interest in beading! i make it (and cards) and tend to locate bead shops when im abroad - just cos i tend to find unusual beads. i was recently in london and was in one in covent garden - probably blew the bank.... they had seed bead colours i only dreamt of.

just thought id mention as i didnt see it mentioned theres Beads and Bling in dublin too. its pretty much across the liffey from yellow brick road. used to be in temple bar. great selection of findings and that - like tiara frames, wire cuff bracelet frames etc

got to say i love finding a cheapo necklace i can cut up and use for parts - beads and findings. or when a friend gives me a bag of their old jewellery scraps!

Larianne, I've scoured a few charity shops for beads - actually Claire's Accessories isn't bad if you're looking for cheap and cheerful stuff, you can buy things for next to nothing and cannibalise them!

Yes! I love doing that! :D Plus it depends on how creative you can be. Sometimes I've bought pieces because of the framework or wiring that they have... and the beads can be boring or ugly... but then it's just a challenge to see if I can alter the beads and make them worthwhile.

    Hi All
Just to let you know that the new bead shop in Bray is nearly ready for opening. We will be opening on the 26th of July.

LOL... I just noticed that this thread is old and I've never seen your store! I'll take a trip into Bray on Saturday... although I've just bought a tonne of stuff so I reeeeally shouldn't.....

I've no idea why but I'm finding myself drawn to beading and jewellery making in the past year or so. It started with paper beads... then beading everything from rings to necklaces.... and now I'm starting to mess with wire.

This week I ordered a LOT of supplies and books which should arrive over the next week or so.... so I can't wait to get started.

Has anyone ever watched jewellerymaker.com? It's on sky under the shopping channel. Just something I flick to every now and again. Unfortunately (or fortunately ) they don't ship to Ireland.

Anyway, the reason I mention them is that I was trying to buy some of these guys in 925... and obviously reasonably priced.

Has anyone spotted some on their travels?

there was a bead shop in hamilton new zealand i planned to go to when i went there 2 yrs ago - course it was closed as it was new yrs holidays - figures! i wnet to one in auckland although only bought tools... i loved the bead shop (its called that) in covent garden - the range is amazing and the crystals they have- so well priced. theyre not like swarovski but theyre as sparkly and a fraction of the cost.

    Hi, girls,

I love hand made jewellery. Doing it by myself not very log, for 2 years now.

Somebody was talking about the courses. Well, I read internet and tried to learn by myself. Anyway, this way of learning suits to meet, but i it is much more easy when somebody shows to you.

btw, do you have any thread where you show (putting photos) what you have done? I would like to upload some pictures and to discuss other people crafts if this possible in the forum :)

hi hobite - i have a blog but its not a step by step kind of thing. i mainly just post pics of what i've done. its not always jewellery though it usually is! update fairly irregularly. but i found other blogs who do similar things so i keep an eye on them every now n again. good way to find out who is doing what although i tend to experiment on whatever comes to mind

    Hi, Aishae,

I have my two blogs, where I upload hand made things. But it always the last piece, but not step by step. It is to hard and time consuming to take pictures in every step.

What is the address of your blog?

This is one of my last brooches :)

    Hi.
I love anything sparkly! I usually prefer quick & easy jewellery, particularly earrings, but I've experimented a little with different kinds of bead weaving. Here's one I did ages ago on a small loom.

thats really pretty. out of interest - i started giving bead looming a go. but cant do it often as my sight is rubbish. but i was having trouble when taking the work off the loom - how do you fix the ends of eg the bracelet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 319 ✭✭TreasureBin

Yes, you need pretty good eyesight and a daylight bulb really helps. ;)

    I either:
    - use a bead cap and headpin at the end. (Tie the thread ends into a knot, put the headpin through the knot and the beadcap. Bend the pin to make a loop for attaching the fastener)
    or else
    - use a leather crimp (Glue AND crimp it onto the threads. It already has the loop for attaching the fastener).

But with this necklace I tried something different and make a few beaded loops on one end (with fine elastic instead of normal thread) and on the other end I used a small wooden bead with a large hole, which I covered with short strands of the seed beads, threading each strand through the hole.

I'll take another photo of the ends and upload that.

Am attaching a pic of the entire necklace, including the ends.

TreasureBin, this is nice. I like the colours: black and white. Myself, I use seed beads only for brooches. But never done anything like yours.

So, girls, what you doing now? I have ready couple of cabachons for my brooches, just need to start.

    Hi

thought I would pop in a few bits that I have been making. I haven't been doing too much jewellery making of late as I have been making my cake toppers.

The collar I made last year, based loosley around Lynn Davey's Rose garden collar, I made a more colourful one before this one and it's a great adaptable pattern. I don't think I could ever do loom work, but I do love bead weaving.

The other two are just little quickies I made from polymer clay to sell at craft fairs..

I'm delighted to see boardsie's sharing their beading!!

This is from polymer clay? Fantastic. Really beautiful. I tried to do something/anythign from polymer clay, it was disaster. My cousin, she made couple of beads and they were ok. But I couldnt do anything, it was too difficult. I know, I dont have any experience working with clay. So, your quickies look really really nice. BTW, I adore green.

Hey Guys, does anyone know a shop in or around Leixlip / Dublin where I can find reels of friendship braclet string? Roughly what price?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 319 ✭✭TreasureBin

Try the Yellow Brick Road in Dublin (near Ha'penny Bridge) for all kinds of beading thread. Friendship bracelets are often made from cotton embroidery thread because of the better range of colours, and you might get that in Hickey's?

Why is postage to Ireland sooooo expensive. Loads of great deals on ebay but I'm put off by the added postage costs. And I am still waiting, 9 weeks and counting, for some jewellery wire, I ordered from China. Ok, rant over, sorry...

Anyway, I have been using www.Beads100.com - They Oirish and prices v good.
