Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

....has just scored a fantastic goal for the Brazilian women in their Olympic semi final against the much fancied Germans. Brazil 3-1 up after 8 minutes of the second half.

Anyone else watching? The standard is really good (apart from the goalkeeping!)

Do women play with the same size goals?

Jesus xavi I was gonna post a Marta thread last week after I saw highlights but was too lazy! She looks class and the standard (as you said) overall is MUCH higher than I thought it would be. I'de love to see her join the premiership, she's no skinnier/fragile than any of the small male players. Marta to United?

    Yeah why?

Well they use the same size ball etc so no reason really to use smaller goals.

Didn't see Jorge Campos getting smaller goals! :pac:

True, but it would explain the more goals.

Incidentally i tried playing in full size goals for the first time in years the other day (used to astro goals).
Good God does it give you a lot of respect for top goal keepers!

 Feck Marta, I've moved on to Cristiane!

Just ripped through four German defenders and and tucked it in the corner. Somersault to celebrate and a quick shake of the hips. Love it!

Of course it's a good reason to use smaller goals for women.

The average height of a top goalkeeper is about 6'3" and they struggle to reach some parts of the goal at times. Far worse when your keeper is sub 6'.

Co-ed teams exist in the US, I play on a couple. We have separate changing rooms :p

On topic, Marta is a fantastic player.

But the standard of women's soccer is pretty high in general, the US women's team have really lost ground to everyone else, which makes things more interesting.

isnt Soccer essentially considerd the no.1 sport for women in America.

which one of the brazilians nutmegged the german that led to the goal?

She didnt push the ball through the players legs she had her foot on top of it and rolled it through. Class.

Women play soccer in countries other then Ireland, you know, where women (and people in general) tend to be slightly taller.

Our keeper is 6'3 (I hate standing beside her on team nights out) :p

No, we only just have the initial formation of a professional women's soccer league.

I would guess softball or maybe basketball would be the number one, with the NBA financing the WMBA since the late 90's.

*maybe* at highschool level soccer is number one (but I doubt it), but other sports are taking over and from college level up, soccer doesn't have the same appeal as the US sports.

    And Peter Cech is 6'7.

I know that there are tall women, but there are taller men.

Like I said, the average man is 4 inches taller than the average woman, (world-wide).

    But it's not new.
The WNBA you pointed out has the same height nets, which I think is stupid, as all you hear, from a lay persons perspective, is about how the women can't dunk.
Lower the bloddy nets and they will!

    :P

The Japanese women's keeper was lost in goal against USA yesterday, she was at fault for 2 goals that she simply couldn't reach! All USA had to do was keep lobbing high specualtive shots at the goal and they had a chance of scoring.

The funniest was when it cut back to Bill O'Herlihy after the highlights and he just called her a "woeful" keeper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,902 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

Ha ha yeah I did see her getting lobbed twice alright.
