Is the belt broke or just needs replacing?

Is it a petrol or diesel?

How do you know there is a problem?
Did a mechanic say it? What did they say?

sorry for the delay in responding

is a 1.4 petrol, mechanic said was belt was gone

So i understand the issue could be not necessarily replacing the belt itself, but any damage caused by belt snapping and getting into engine?

have asked around a few places and they differ

mechanic who gave initial verdict said 850, atlas in baldoyle say 350

Could be wrong but think atlas is just quoting belt replacement.

Timing belt for a 03 Meange 1.4 should cost €400 MAX. This should also include the water pump. Takes half a day to do with a competent mechanic

Not if it's after snapping and making shoite of the engine.

It'd be a write off then, cost for getting that fixed is about 1500.

They didnt specify that the engine had been damaged because of the snap.

The mechanic could have been chancing his arm quoting that the number to his missus

Just a bit of clarity here. Its not a replacement belt needed its removal and repair of the head as this engine is an interference engine the pistons will have impacted off the valves damaging them.
Once this is done its refit of head including head gasket and fittment of timing belt and waterpump. This job will run somewhere around a thousand euro or more... this dosent have to be dont by a main dealer but for the love of the sweet lord do not let someone like Atlas Tyres at it.
