Sky dish, alinging, tuning, getting nothing

Lads,

I have a sky box, with card, got a dish there about 8 month ago on boards, 2nd hand, so I setup the rig last nite, well to be honest I went into program mode ( service, 4,6) and took the dish outside and with it in my hands, with the tv in view I tried to get a signal but no joy.

Sooooo, tell me am I mental or can I get a signal like this?

any pointers, can trees block a signal?

Bear in mind that the box can take a while to respond to your moving the dish. Usually a second or so lag.

Also, yes, trees can block a signal if they're close or high enough

You really needa "beeper" sat finder in line with cable as the Sky box can even "hang" if it momentary picks up non-Sky channel and loses siginal.

You need to mode dish VERY slowly. Perch it on a step ladder or something.

2 degree shift and it sees a different satellite or nothing.

Ok lads, ye think I need a sat finder? I might invest, costly though are they?

Is it hard to connect a new cable to the satellite. I have coax satellite cable.

The one I have is fairlt short

Either get a 20 Euro one (needle or LED bar graph) or else a 1500 Euro one.

I will post a link to a set of instructions later.

Maplin have them but I think a bit more than 20 Euro. Not sure who else local. Mail order no shortage of choice.

I prefer the analog needle type to the LED bargraph.

For Astra 19E or Hotbird 13E you can uuse an old analog Sat receiver, but the Sky packages at 28E on Astra2/Eurobird there is no analog.

Before investing the money make sure U check ur LNB, prefferably on a aligned dish, for example at some friend house, offen the LNB might be a problem, and when align the dish, bear in mind that U have to set the elevation angle is well, not just left and right

I found the cheapie sat finder included in the Lidl kit to be quite useful. Without it I didn't get a thing. Can you borrow one from someone?

Could try alright Pete, prob been I don't know anyone with one!!! Not to worry, I am buying a dreambox and 1m dish sometime next year so will need one then, so may as well invest now

the best way to align a sat dish to sky digital is first use a compass or a neighbours dish to suss out where to mount it, then when you mount it use the services 4,6 method to find the correct satellite, use very small movements wait 5 seconds,
I actually use a small hand held Casio TV with a cable linking it to the digibox's RF output to do it, Its far better than any of the cheaper Sat finders out there which will give a response to any Satellite,
