Getting an Irish IP address when abroad

Hi,

I've just moved abroad and I'm missing some of my usual Irish television shows on RTE and TV3. I'm just wondering, is there a way to view the RTE and TV3 online players but without being in the country? I'm sure there's a way around it (well, I'm hoping there is!).

Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers.

You'd need an Irish proxy. Google a few there.

You need a vpn, decent ones aren't cheap. This ones $10 a month and comes highly recommended:

this one is good to 79 dollars for a year. Handy as you can pick an ip address for any where in world, so if you want to watch a show on hbo/nbc just select an american one, or something from the rte player select a Irish one. They have every country you could want covered.

No, that'll also be geo-blocked from a non Irish ip

Can't recommend overplay highly enough. I've been living in Canada for 6 months now and have been able to view Irish content (and worldwide content for that matter) with no problems. Very handy piece of kit

I tried that website but wasn't able to get anything from it, unfortunately.

As for the VPN, I've yet to get my first salary working abroad so I guess I'll probably have to do without it for the next few weeks.

Yes, not that hard to do either.

But, You don't even need to use the server, a decent router can be setup to be a vpn server. You'll need decent upload for a vpn. You'll also need a static ip address from your Isp or to setup Dyndns to update a dynamically changing ip address.

I have a vpn setup on my Mams connection for my sisters in USA, they can watch the Rugby and GAA on the RTE website on a 1Mbit upload connection. I also have my own vpn setup on my own router. I use it for secure internet banking, Paypal etc while out and about on public wi-fi and mobile broadband. Its a secure connection to where I can trust and I can use it from anywhere in the world.

Use the vidalia and mgeni tor package...once your connected to tor you can then choose which country to browse from...iv watched RTE all over the place with it...also works for bbc Iplayer here

I thought Tor was just an anonymiser, does it give you an Irish ip?

My own limited experience with Tor were that it was painfully slow

If you use mgeni with it there is a flag symbol on the top right of the bar, click that and chose the country you want to browse from...It is slow but i've never had a problem with streams once you give it a min to buffer...Iplayer works perfect

I'm not sure if it's just an anonymiser, but when I installed it and got it running it started running the TV3 player perfectly! I think it might be able to do it for just about any player, if anyone wants to grab it and download it via the link while they still can.

All I have to do now is set up the television with the laptop with a HDMI cable and hopefully I will be able to watch it on the big screen, just like at home!

Some good advice on this thread. I'm not currently located in the Republic so could never access the RTE player. Logged in remotely to home house's PC and set up a VPN connection in Windows XP. All the region-locked content is now streaming perfectly!

Next time I'm home I'll be flashing our WRT54GL Router with some DD-WRT firmware and will set up a proper VPN. Actually looking forward to going home for this.

Okay, I got a new laptop only recently and re-installed Tor on the new laptop, hoping for it to work like normal, but it says that the current one I'm using is out of date, even though I downloaded it straight from the torproject.org website. Can anyone help out on how to get Tor up and running again, or if there is another working VPN that I can use for free?

I'm bumping this.

Does anyone know of an Irish proxy (paid for or free) that absolutely, most definitely works abroad? I'm getting sick of TV3's iPlayer restrictions, so I'm willing to fork out now and get it sorted once and for all. But, I'm just wondering, if anyone knows one (preferably from personal experience) that works perfectly for Irish Channels, and more specifically TV3, without any problems?

I'd appreciate any feedback, guys! Cheers!
