Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sun Tunnel in bathroom

I am thinking of installing a sun tunnel (from eg Velux) over shower area in bathroom to bring in some natural light. Has anyone experience of the air tightness performance of using these units? I wouldn't want to compromise airtightness in our build. Also, any opinions on placing this directly over a shower?
    Thanks.

My mum has one is her house - also in an en-suite with no external window.

Granted it was put in about 12/13 years ago, so they may have improved but I would avoid if possible. There is a noticeable draft and it's very bad for collecting dead flies. If you can, could you fit a regular Velux (or equivalent) window? You may still get flies, but at least you won't have to take off the lens to clean them.

If you do go for it, consider how you would insulate the tunnel itself, it must be a pretty big draw on heat.

Saying that, it does let in a good bit of light and allows a little ventilation, better than nothing I suppose.

    Hi tedimc,
Thanks for the response. There is a window in the bathroom but the shower area lacks light due to the chimney coming up through the bathroom. The shower is behind the chimney. We did consider a Velux window but I think it will be too high over the shower, hard to clean etc. There will be some light in that area either way so might just forget about the idea.

I fitted three of these sun tubes in my house and found them to be very good. I did have an issue with dead flies in one for a while and found that one of the joins in the pipe had opened up so refitted it and this solved the problem.

Properly installed, there should be no draught from them at all, I have also seen some that have an integral light fitting as well.

I looked into these quite a bit as was considering one at one stage and the conclusion I came to was using an electric light was far superior overall. They can't be used for ventilation, create a thermal bridge, potential air leak and another penetration in your roof.
