keeping chickens. what can people tell me?

i have an ordinary suburban garden 100 x 30 feet. i see the wired chicken coops on donedeal or adverts and they can hold 2 or 3 hens. do they have to be let out to roam the garden, which is fair enough, and do they destroy the garden? i dont wanna get them if i cant look after them properly. thanks:)
