He did similar work at Olympiakos, he was technical director/first team coach

Who knows, maybe FSG will interview him about the job aswell

Segura as Manager/Techinal Director & Borrell as first team coach.

These guys were not happy being overlooked at Barca time and time again, i'd imagine they came to Liverpool with ambitions of being involved with the first team eventually

Right but that was my point about three posts back? The thing was I said while I was a huge fan of Pep it seems a strange move.

One of these Twitter ITK w@nkers is asking Tony Barrett will Skrtel wait around for new manager or is his heart with Man City.

Is this a rumour I missed or something?

Rumour started last weekend that Skrtel handed in a transfer request but in last couple of days Skrtel has rubbished that rumour

    So then

    Rodgers
    Martinez
    Villas-Boas
    Capello
    Guardiola

Objectively that's not a bad list! At least its one based on sound footballing principles regardless of how fanciful at least one of the names is.

I'm not sure but it does seem like things are happening behind the scenes and rapidly IMO.

I'm a little surprised this hasn't heightened the Rafa rumours though ;)

While I thought Rafa was a non-runner this news would make him a possibility. Makes perfect sense and if Rafa is going to be interviewed, a good interview could swing it!

    The guardian......

Liverpool have wasted little time in the search for Kenny Dalglish's successor by drawing up a wish-list headed by Pep Guardiola and Fabio Capello, and have already approached Roberto Martínez at Wigan Athletic, Swansea City's Brendan Rodgers and André Villas-Boas within 24 hours of bringing the Anfield legend's reign to an end.

Fenway Sports Group, the club's owners, received permission to hold talks with Martínez from the Wigan chairman, Dave Whelan, as their wide-ranging approach to identifying Liverpool's next manager became apparent a day after Dalglish's exit. Unlike Whelan, Swansea have not cleared the way for Rodgers to meet Liverpool as yet but are expected to do so. Villas‑Boas is also in the frame for the Liverpool job but John W Henry and Tom Werner, the principal owner and the chairman at Anfield respectively, intend to assess several candidates as they finalise a shortlist. Martínez, Rodgers and Villas‑Boas are by no means the only coaches under consideration. The ideal candidates are Guardiola and Capello but Liverpool's prospects of landing the outgoing Barcelona coach and former England manager are understood to be remote. Guardiola has previously stated his intention to take a sabbatical from the game following a trophy-laden but draining spell at the Camp Nou, while Capello is keen on the Chelsea job. Borussia Dortmund's Jürgen Klopp and Marseille's Didier Deschamp are also thought to be under consideration.

The Wigan chairman revealed: "When Liverpool sacked Kenny I have to say I thought Liverpool would be knocking on the door, and sure enough they are. I did promise Roberto when a big club comes he will have permission to talk to them and they don't come any bigger than Liverpool. I gave permission and he will be talking to them soon."

Martínez does not have the title-winning experience that forms part of FSG's criteria but he will get the opportunity to convince Liverpool's owners that he can fit into the new management structure they intend to install at Anfield. Whelan said: "We played there [at Liverpool] about two months ago. There's no heart at the club. It's a bit disturbing when you think a club like Liverpool is functioning without a heart. I mentioned that to Roberto and I think there's no heart beating at Liverpool. I think the sooner they get a heart the better. I don't know Roberto's feelings about Liverpool, I think he's going there with an open mind. I would love to keep Roberto, he's a great manager."

Liverpool's managing director, Ian Ayre, claimed the selection of Dalglish's successor represented the most critical in the club's recent history. He also insisted Anfield remains an attraction for the finest managers in the game. FSG are being advised on the process by "highly regarded people within football", according to Ayre, who revealed the next manager must work under a new management structure at Anfield. Damien Comolli's former role as director of football is to be fragmented this summer although the new manager will continue to have an influence on transfers.

Liverpool face a third season outside the Champions League next term and Uefa's financial fair play rules, which requires clubs throughout Europe to break even, come into effect in 2013‑14. The failure to mount a challenge to the top four this season, and FSG's doubts over Dalglish's ability to deliver one next year, cost him his job despite winning the Carling Cup and reaching the FA Cup final.

Asked if Liverpool had made a more important appointment than the one now confronting Henry and Werner, Ayre said: "No. It's absolutely critical that we get it right and we move forward. The Champions League is where the football club has to be. When John and Tom arrived, they said they wanted to win. They mean winning and being in that competition. They want to be winning the league. It won't happen overnight. Nobody is kidding themselves. But you have got to be heading in that direction."

Replacements for Comolli – with his old job to be divided between its administrative, scouting and negotiating functions – Graham Bartlett, the former commercial director, and the head of communications Ian Cotton are expected in the next fortnight. The managerial search, said Ayre, who recently had his contract extended at Liverpool, is based "on a whole range of things, from experience and ability, methodology, style of play, character traits. As we've seen in the past it is not just about the football. It is about how controlling some are compared to others. There's a particular process that fits part of the plan we are trying to put together. It has to be a manager who fits in all of that."

Ayre's "controlling" comment would appear to rule out Rafael Benítez from a Liverpool return, the former manager having been given control over all football operations in his final contract.

David Dein, the former vice-chairman of Arsenal, was spotted at several matches with Liverpool officials towards the end of the season but Ayre refused to confirm who is advising Henry and Werner. Villas-Boas, Klopp and Deschamps all meet the criteria of younger title-winning coaches but, having again failed to qualify for the Champions League, and appointed from Fulham (Roy Hodgson) and within (Dalglish) for its last two managers, Ayre denies Liverpool are struggling to entice the most coveted coaches.

Ayre added: "Liverpool still gets everyone excited and interested. We may have lost our way a little in terms of performances but it is still one of the biggest football clubs in the world. It still has a huge fan base. It has also got a good solid business foundation. It has got good owners who are committed. A lot of that doesn't exist in a lot of other football clubs. If you are a manager at that level or you are a manager aspiring to get there, I still think this is one of the biggest jobs in world football.

"I am under no illusion that we can go and find a top-class manager to come to this football club, for all the reasons I have stated. I do not think we are in a situation where the very experienced, very capable, very driven managers who people would want to see here do not want to come."

Martinez is still odds against on the betting exchanges

    http://www.express.co.uk/football/view/320709/
FORMER Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has reportedly held talks with Liverpool over replacing sacked boss Kenny Dalglish at Anfield.
It is thought there was contact between Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and Villas-Boas prior to yesterday's decision to terminate Dalglish's contract.

And it seems that an expression of interest by the Portuguese boss in taking charge on Merseyside prompted FSG's action late yesterday afternoon.

Villas-Boas is now heavy favourite with bookies to take charge of Liverpool, just two months after he left Chelsea.

The 34-year-old fits in with principal owner John W Henry's desire for a young and hungry manager to replace Dalglish.

In October last year, the American admitted that such an appointment had been his initial plan when replacing Roy Hodgson but Dalglish's impressive performance as caretaker boss had persuaded him otherwise.
The former Porto boss was also attempting a much-needed overhaul of Chelsea's ageing squad prior to his dismissal, something that he will not have to cope with at Liverpool.

“Initially [the idea was to go with someone younger],” he said.

“You want to have long-term stability in as much of the staff as possible.”

Despite his relative failure at Chelsea, Villas-Boas will feel that he was not given enough time at Stamford Bridge to fully implement his coaching methods.
The former Porto boss was also attempting a much-needed overhaul of Chelsea's ageing squad prior to his dismissal, something that he will not have to cope with at Liverpool.

After heavy investment in young players such as Jordan Henderson, Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing over recent months, Villas-Boas will already have the basis of a squad at Anfield on whom he can apply his ideas.

As a result, FSG will hope that Villas-Boas will be able to repeat the success he enjoyed in Portugal when he led Porto for Europa League glory with an attacking side.

    We'll see amiable, we'll see ;)

The 4 realistic candidates are Martinez, Rafa, Rodgers and AVB.

AVB and Rafa are free agents, so we really should have heard by now (from reliable sources!) if they had been approached. The way AVB lost the dressing room at Chelsea may be a put off and I don't know if they'll want to go down the route of hiring a former manager again in Rafa, especially somebody who causes serious divisions in the fan base.

Rodgers has had only one season in top flight football and he inherited Swansea's structure rather than creating it himself.

I think Lambert should be in the frame but he isn't a media darling and I think non knowledgeable fans of football (most fans are this!) would ridicule his appointment. He also only has one season in the top flight, which would go against him.

To me, it just has Martinez written all over it, and I thought this before it came to light that he'd been approached. That's why I stuck money on it.

Of course I could be completely wrong, but it's just my gut feeling.

True, but every other candidate can be gotten at 6/1 or over. He is the clear favorite with the bookies, although I know that means very little.

I would actually add Lambert to your list.
I've just had another bet on him at a particularly large price.
Out of Lambert, Rodgers and Martinez I think Lambert is the best qualified.
I actually have a feeling that Swansea will be relegated next season.
I also have it in my head about Rodgers getting sacked at reading before.

What's the point of having criteria if you are going to interview candidates who don't meet it? As of right now I expect it to be Martinez which will be a step back or sideways at most.

I think Lambert should be in the frame but I just don't see FSG opting for him ahead of Martinez. He hasn't really been linked with the job much either, that's why you can get such large prices on him.

I like Lambert myself. I think his time as a player at Borussia Dortmund will stand him in good stead.
If Liverpool were going to gamble on a manager on the up he would be my choice.

It's nice that AVB wouldn't have to deal with ageing players (ignoring Carra, Stevie, Kuyt, Maxi) unlike Chelsea.

I'd rate Lambert ahead of Rodgers as Rodgers had a whole philosophy and club behind him, still a remarkable job given finances, I'd still rate Martinez higher than Lambert. He has seen of Birmingham, West Ham, Wolves and others. At times he has struggled, naturally given the budget given to him but he has delivered when the pressure was on, 3 seasons in a row.

Still AVB or if Pep is advising, a surprise appointment.

Good to see the best advise sought. Rafa can be thanked for the Pep advice.

I think there'll be a surprise or 2 yet to come in the interview list and those saying Liverpool are a mid table club will get a huge shock.

We won a CL 7 years ago, got to a final 5 years ago and that matters far more than a PL title. Some don't get that unfortunately.

Nope not Rafa directly. Rafa hired some of the Barca backroom staff, one of which is being touted as due a big promotion.

Guardiali is giving advise on the next manager.

I see it as significant, others might not. I still see Rafa as very unlikely.
