I'm looking at this for a pal, I don't know much about this engine. Any ideas? The only known problem is that the battery is weak.

    The car is a '98 Golf 1.4 petrol 8V.

The car misfires on starting, then engine rpm (at idle) cycles up and down as you can see in d'video. If you step on the gas & increase rpm to about 3000, the engine steadies out.

    Any input welcome :)

Bad idle with cycling up and down often is to do with how air is taken into engine.
I'd guess either/or MAF and throttle body are dirty and needs a clean. It's a pretty easy job. Use electronic sensor cleaner spray for maf and carb cleaner for TB, add old toothbrush for throttle body scrubbing.
Do the TB first, then the MAF. If still happens you've only cleaned some parts that probably needed a clean anyway.
Also check hoses for obvious tears/leaks.

I'd start with the simple things first. An air leak or blocked idle control system would be the most common cause of hunting on older engines like that. Check all the rubber vacuum and intake pipes for cracks as they would likely be well perished after 15 years. Then check the throttle body for any oil residue build up and clean if needed and check inside the filter housing for excess build up to from the breather pipes.

The misfire on start up may be related but on those engines the cause is more commonly found in the distributor and/or leads. A small crack, excess wear or dampness could all cause a miss when cold that levels out when hot or at higher RPM.

Many thanks Biko and ND, we'll try the cleaning stuff in the first instance.
