Lock for garden gate

Would this lock be strong enough for a garden gate or is there a reasonable alternative?

Doesn't look very water tight or corrosion proof. Rust is the biggest enemy with outdoor locks. You might be better considering a waterproof padlock.

If it's wooden gate & not on a steel frame, you may also get problems with expansion & shrinkage. A typical mortice lock only has a short throw & you may find that it is barely hanging on one minute & jamming the next. It's also really easy for anyone to prise the gate open.

You could use a long heavy bolt & padlock with a cutout in the gate to allow access from both sides. If you definitely want a mortice lock then I would go to a specialist & see if you can get a weatherproof one with a long throw.

My neighbour has one of these. He just keeps it well lubricated and its still working a couple of years later.

Just remember the lock will only ever be as strong as the gate.
