Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Saw a Metro (Rover/'Mini') today round Palmerstown ,first Ive noticed for YEARS!They were everywhere up to early 2000s-and in UK they were at epidemic levels.Seriously ?When's the last time you saw one?Not badly missed to be honest!Fiat UNO generally similar although probably a far better car .NCT seriously thinning out the Primeras-(How could Nissan have got the early 2000s Primera sooooo wrong compared with Avensis !?And as for the Almera replacing Tiida???!!!Most old Rovers pre 75 model seem semi extinct also.Alfa 155?Even old model Clios are getting rare.I suppose when the Tiger roared we all got newer cars but there probably arent that many reliable , NCT passable , pre 2000 cars left apart from the likes of the 'bubbly' Micras, 'auld' Carinas /Avenses...Probably tens of thousands of Celicas,Volvos ,Lagunas, even Mercs and BMWs etc etc being scrapped for the sake of a ball joint or the stupid CC based road tax!Sad...(ok well maybe not the Lagunas !)

I'd say you'll find Scrappage schemes killed more of those cars than the NCT did.

even more so , lack of proper maintenance killed them by the million.

Funnily enough, I just saw a '91 reg Micra on the way to the shop a few minutes ago. Looked in top condition too.

Reg snobbery and easy finance combined with scrappage schemes rather than the NCT killed the cars you are on about.

I was stuck today on Mallow-michelstown road behind rover 100, I wished nct would have gotten to it. That car scars the roads with its presence.

    Mondeo MK1

    Fiesta MK II (especially vans)

    Escort/Orions, virtually none left anywhere

    Sierra

    Starlet

    Corolla

Polo II (pre 94 both the "coupe" and "estate" models

    Golf II and III

    Passat B3/B4

Renault 5, 9, 11, 19 and 21 were all big sellers, early Clio's and Laguna's are disappearing fast.

All of the above were huge selllers in Ireland in their day, very rare now.

I was only thinking about the rover metro yesterday!! I learned to drive and passed my test in 1996 in a 1994 purple rover metro 1.4 diesel!!

Id say a 91 Micra is a fundamentally more reliable car than a 2005 one !

The Irish weather and never keeping any car in a garage probably killed most of them, plus (as already mentioned) lack of servicing.
The NCT merely flagged up a lot of rusted deathtraps with knackered engines and brakes resulting from the above.
Most European countries you will immediately notice a lot of older cars still on the road.
Also a factor in my mind:
The Irish insurance companies fear and loathing of any car older than 10 years, because everyone knows it's automatically a death-trap and will skid out of control into a creche, killing 25 children.
Not forgetting the scrappage scheme, of course, along with nonsensical "Green" dogma and propaganda.

I had a metro when I was around 20, and I loved it. It went like a go-kart and was easy on juice. Tougher than I expected as well. Then again, I also liked the older late 80's early 90's Escort. Comfy, was the word. Like driving a sponge!

I think most motoring enthusiasts would not describe their dream machine as 'like driving a sponge '.Jeez a lowered MX5 or (even WORSE!) a Panda 100hp are like riding (eh sitting on...) a concrete block!

Was out running the other day and saw an apparently-pristine 88WX Rover 213. There's also a small but thriving market for old Alfa 155s - some lovely ones still around (probably Alfa's reputation for reliability had a lot to do with them falling out of favour).

This. Was in the local dismantlers recently and there were loads of older cars
in perfect nick that had been written off for scrappage.. made me ANGRY!!

It all depends on the car.
    Once had a 1984 Mercedes W123, t'was the 2 liter petrol automatic.
It was like driving a couch. Big, lazy, comfy, I called it Big Bertha, it was like being whisked everywhere in the arms and cleavage of a Valkyrie.
I might not go as far as sponge, but I know where he's coming from.
Though an Escort of that year shouldn't be spongy!;)
