Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Corporal punishment in schools

When was Corporal punishment in schools banned in Ireland?

If a pupil was subjected to corporal punishment after that date would they have a cause of action against the school/teacher/the state?

In 1982 the minister of education banned the use of corporal punishment in schools funded by the state. In 1997 the protection enjoyed by teachers against being charged with assault was removed.
There would be no cause of action against the state unless the teacher was employed directly by the state. Most unlikely. A criminal prosecution could be taken but might be difficult if there was a significant lapse of time before a complaint was made to the Garda.
A civil action could be taken against the teacher and the management of the school but it could also be statute barred if it was a long time ago.
