Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

M8 Dunkettle to Watergrasshill - Learner driver?

    Hey All,
Does the M8 motorway start at the dunkettle roundabout in Cork, or does it not start until the toll after juntion 17 (exit to watergrasshill)/

Google maps seems to indicate it doesn't start until after junction 17, as does this site. However, the section of road from dunkettle to junction 17 has blue signs and indicates it is infact a motorway.

Even so, anytime I have entered a motorway there are huge signs saying NO LEARNERS, there's no such sign for this section of road, however, those signs do appear after the toll. The section of road also only has two lanes and looks like any other nation road.

So my question is can a learner driver drive from dunkettle roundabout to junction 17 (watergrasshill) on the "M8" and then exit before the toll?

Its starts at Dunkettle. It is a motorway so learners should not use it even though every cyclist seems to use it...

First of all its Dunkettle Interchange Dunkettle roundabout is farther on towards Cork on the N8, And if your getting your map information from Google Maps then silly you.

Technically starts 400 meters North of Dunkettle Interchange in accordance to the legilsation put through to change it from National Route to Motorway :D.

OP, just because the warning signs are up, it doesn't mean that the normal motorway restrictions don't apply. There are clear blue M8 signs just as the road starts. All signs on the Dunkettle Interchange also show that that exit on the roundabout is a motorway.

The signage at Dunkettle is lacking to say the least, although designated a motorway there are no signs prohibiting learners cyclist, tractors etc. most of which use it on a regular basis.

Does it not start at the top of the hill at the turn off to glanmire/sallybrook?
Is it not 100k/h upto there.

According to NRA defo starts a little bit up the road from the interchange, as previous poster has said. A motorway can have speed restrictions lower than the 120k.

as far as I'm aware, it starts just after the turn off for Glanmire, at least that's when it moves from 100kph to 120kph

NRA website shows it stars at the point where the slip road joins the road just before dunkettle interchange. Or about .5k from the interchange.

It starts exactly 400 meters north of the Dunkettle Interchange.

Will people stop coming in here saying that the Motorway starts at Junction 18. It clearly doesn't and you're doing nothing but confusing the situation.

M8 signs just after the Dunkettle Interchange. It doesn't matter one iota that there are no restriction signs up. To be driving on Irish roads, you should know the restrictions which apply to motorways, including learner drivers.

Opps sorry I said about .5k or 500 meters instead of exactly 400 meters.
