Well I think most people that don't like Chrono Cross hate it because it's a total disservice to the first game and has one fo those plots that could give Kingdom Hearts a run for it's money in stupidity. If you take it as a game on it's own merits and not a sequel to Chrono Trigger then it's meant to be pretty good if flawed.

As a stupid teenager who thought FFVII was the greatest accomplishment by human kind I would have fallen into the first category so I'm looking forward to going back to it sometime with some actual maturity under my belt.

ive found that myself recently with one or sequels ive picked up its best to treat them as standalones otherwise your going to be left annoyed and unsatisfied i.e star ocean second evolution its a sequel but not really best to forget the first one when you load up the second. poor example but yeah
shame that crafting system cant be forgotten though :(

and ff7 was fairly polished for when it came out if memory serves still looks good on a small screen too :P
also wasnt it the first or one of the first games to use fmv's throughout a whole game? couldnt get away from them after a while could have happend naturally either way though. idk im old and sleepy :P

also started grandia missed out on that when i was a boy
so right now am playing crono cross, grandia, and lunar 1

was playing tales of the world radiant mythology but burned out on that real quick will pick it back up though the art is nice.

FFVII definitely wasn't the first to use FMV, sure games have been using FMV since Dragon's Lair in 1983 and there were plenty of RPGs on the Mega CD and PC Engine CD that used FMV cutscenes. When FFVII came out FMV was really frowned upon due to how low quality it was in most games, the exceptions being those little known RPG's on the Mega CD and PC Engine CD like Ys and Lunar 1 and 2. FFVII was different because the FMV was actually really high quality.

I definitely wouldn't cal FFVII polished either, that game was a complete rush job. It was however still a hell of a lot of fun. The FFVII adverts on TV famously showed no gameplay footage, it was all FMV so it tricked people into buying it who then realised RPGs were actually a lot of fun, except of course the muppets that returned it because they didn't realise there was so much reading involved

You're going to love Grandia, it's absolutely superb. It's got the best battle system of any RPG I've played and the story is full of charm.

Alright Persona 4, it's been a few years, but let's do this.

Eternal Sonata. Fun game, but damn you love your lengthy cut scenes. Like beyond ridiculous sometimes.

I enjoyed the visual style and the interesting light/dark combat mechanic but otherwise ES felt like it was straight from the PS1 era (if not even older). JRPGs have evolved in so many ways that it just felt generic and simplistic and by about half way through I'd had enough.

Be interested to know if it does pick up later on so keep us posted.

I heard later on it uses a lot of palette swaps and gets repetitive.

I'm playing quite a bit of Dragon's Dogma. Feels more like a western RPG. It's like a much smaller Skyrim but with a battle system that doesn't suck donkey dick.

Playing it myself atm, much better game than skyrim, pity the world isn't as big,I love the combat.

On eternal sonata....I 1k'd it, personally I found it a good game for what it is but not one I'd spend days playing

Is tales of grace f worth 50 euros?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,831 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Should it not be less than that by now?

Haven't played but it's €45 on PSN and about €30 on Amazon I think so don't give Gamestop your money!

It's 50 on gamestop and when you convert sterling on amazon it works out at 45 or there abouts.I'll leave it I think.

It's 33 euros on playasia with free shipping. Apparently according to Tales fans it's the best in the series other than Xillia which is coming in June.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 80,756 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sephiroth_dude

Oh my........33 euro is very tempting indeed :D.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 80,756 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sephiroth_dude

It says shipped within 1-2 weeks?does that mean there out of stock? I found it on shopto.net for 19.95 sterling .

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,831 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Usually means they have another supplier for it rather than their warehouse. If it's out of stock it will say it is.

Playing Devil Survivor Overclocked at the moment. It's quite fun but the character designs are really bad.

They're worse again in the sequel! Theres a girl who looks like she's got a wardrobe under her jumper.

Make sure to talk to every character every time you get an opportunity. It affects the options you have later in the game. I didn't realise this on my first playthrough and was limited to the paths I could take. The sequel is much clearer on this feature with you ranking up colleagues akin to Persona 4.

Plugging away at Lunar: Silver Star Harmony, quality game, really enjoying it. Got Persona 4 and Disgaea 3, for after it, and a few Final Fantasy saves I need to cut through.

I'm almost 14 hours into Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2. Currently rocking a heal slime in my party, with an angel slime in the reserves to gain some levels before I start using it in the active party. I'm in the level just after the ice level (there's always an ice level!)

Etrian Odyssey IV is really addictive.

About 15 hours into Trails in the Sky. Lovely isn't a word I'd normally use to describe a game but it seems to suit this one. Such a pleasant experience all round. Well paced, excellent script and a nice balance between combat/plot/character development. The dialogue really makes it special, hopefully the sequel(s) get the same localisation team.

It reminds me of Grandia, it's got the same upbeat atmosphere of adventure and likeable characters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,897 ✭✭✭megaten

I played about 10 hours and couldn't really get into it. I'll probably give it another go though since were definitely getting the sequel now.

I'm wondering how I completely forgot about that series, definately one I'll be looking into re-playing.

Did Grandia 2 have box art with (at least here) an airship on the front of it or am I thinking on a different game? Having a serious bout of nostalgia here.

That's another up beat adventure RPG that I love :) Wish there were more made like it and less RPGs trying to emulate the melodrama of FFVII (which worked because in that game because between the melodrama it had it's own charming adventure going on).

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,213 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

I loved Skies of Arcadia back when i Dreamcast. Would love to have given the Gamecube version a go, as i remember they reduced tge amount of random battles they had in it, which was one of my gripes with it originally. Loved the ship to ship battles though.

Still slowly plugging along at Etrian Oddessy IV. I don't know how similar it is to the earlier games but I really like it.
I think for the first time I actually have a vague understanding of how to approach stuff like skill trees and the like since everything is laid out so clearly.
For a game thats just a bunch of grids it has a fantastic sense of adventure.
I've been playing it far more than soul hackers which I was looking forward too much more.

On the Final Chapter of Trails in the Sky. Surprised that this 4th chapter is the final one. I'm 25+ hours in and expected to be only half way through! Only starting to get the hang of the Orbments and the characters are only level 23.

Very enjoyable game though. Looking forward to the sequel.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,831 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I played the first one, it's one of the best games I've ever played. The newer ones apparently offer more freedom to go offand do siequests whereas 1 and 2 are just one big dungeon.

The map is such a simple addition but it adds so much to the game. Basically the map is your story and it's you creating it. It makes the whole thing feel more personally. That and it's just a damn fine game. Just a shame the music has gone orchestrated. While it's great music, Yuzo Koshiro's NEC PC-88 music from the rest of the series sounds far more distinctive.

Not heard anything about it but it's made by the NIS main team so should be quality.

I'll just leave what I got today here:

Only in terms of visuals. It a turn based rogue like except every time you die the levels you gained increase your base stats you you end up stronger the next run.
