Hi Guys, I'm just looking for a bit of advice or stories of experience with an issue I have. Ok so my story is I work in the construction Industry and I'm really in need of a career change. I did the first year of the Higher Certificate in Computer systems management but due to finances I wasn't able to do the following year, so all being well I'm planning to go back next September (a whole 2 years after finishing year 1) to finish the course.

I'm just a bit worried that after such a long time out I'll struggle with the course. I look over the notes I have but it feels like I've forgotten most of it so I know I have a lot of work to get it back in my head.

But I'm just wondering if anyone else has gone back to complete a course after missing a couple of years and how did you cope? Even better if anyone one has done the same thing with the course I'm talking about.

Any help or advice would be massively appreciated.

I am currently in the second year of the higher cert in computing and I had to repeat maths last year due to failing the module in the first year so this is really my third year. After I finally got past maths, I did courses in A+ and Security+ to fill the gap of the second semester - it was the wrong approach and I should have caught up on the stuff that I struggled with in first year because quite a fair bit of that came up in the first semester (the current semester) of the second year.

I cant change any of that now and I have to battle on to the second semester and hope that I dont have more than one module exam to repeat next August. My advice to you would be to check out courses on the likes of Pluralsight (NCI endorse this) and CBT Nuggets that specialise in introductory and intermediate courses to many areas of computing like java programming, web design, networking, security, databases etc. Getting an insight into how these things work will make the second year feel less daunting for you and its always beneficial to look beyond the usual coursenotes handed out by the lecturers and their superiors:)

Thanks a million for that, I'm gonna check out those sites now. Really appreciate the help, and good luck in your course.
