Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I bought one a few weeks ago from that seller

Is it not easier to go for (from Bargain Alerts thread):

Got an email from eBay on 28/10 stating that item was reduced to £55.95, gone back up again.

    £15 for P & P. There's probably cheaper available.

Man android boxes have got more detailed...

Ram, Rom and chips are all over the place: Using this site , it seems the top chip is:
    • The RK3328 as it is Android 7.0 but 4 core.
    • Then S912 which is 8 core but Android 6.0
    • Anything S905X or S905W will not produce 4k or even proper HD for youtube etc.

Then I see many boxes with the S912 chip that say they have android 7.0.

So what's the story, my last box broke as Kodi wouldn't operate as the Android version was too old and couldn't update no matter what was tried.

    I've been looking at:
    Mecool M8S PRO | S912 chip | 2 GB Ram | 16 GB ROM

Any opinion on this an why the Xiaomi Mi Box is so popular?

Because it runs Android TV not the tablet version of Android hacked to run on a TV screen, it has Netflix and YouTube 4k and is getting good support through updates

If I know something will be even slightly future proof through updates then thats good enough for me. A quick google says it runs on the S905X chip. From when I read this is less than the others.

I have chromecast and a smart tv, so need just two clicks to get to kodi. I might look at some youtube vids too.

I'd go up to €70. Might risk customs and buy from China too from other sites.

For 70 I'd go with the Mi box.
Someone mentioned earlier only a few weeks till black Friday ,currenly $67 and may come down further then.

Whatever box you guys are looking at, I would definitely suggest hanging on until Black Friday and/or Cyber Monday - hoping to pick up a couple of deals myself on a Shield and Minix U-9. Fingers crossed anyway! ;):D

Genuine question - do you need any more internal storage if only streaming? Or do you only need if you want to store movies etc on the actual box?

You do not really need more storage. It allows you to install more apps really. Larger storage should also equal a longer life, but realistically, most people seem to move on after a couple of years.

If you paid with PayPal then open a dispute with them. GB are a nightmare to deal with for returns.

Is it the box or the power supply? Some of them aren't great. Perhaps try another one on it.

    hi

Wondering/hoping if someone might be able to point me in the right direction

Just received my first android box: X96 Mini Analogic S905W 2GB/16GB

installed Kodi from playstore. But Kodi resolution is greyed out on 1280x720 and I cant change it like i can do with windows kodi.

Airdroid shows HD as resolution so why cant i modify inside Kodi?

Is still a hardware limitation due to cheap box, or installing something like Libreelec resolve it?

I've been using my H96 pro plus for a week and hopefully there will be no power issues etc but I have to say. What a machine. It flies along with absolutely everything I do with it and streaming is perfect.

I have a quick question for people and I suppose its just for opinions.

Why use and put more time into Kodi than just using other streaming apps that work perfectly as standalone? Kodi is grand like but I don't see this major attraction people have with it.

I used to love Kodi and its ease of use but then it all went a bit mad with lads falling out over repos and FBI seizing domains and repos so I left for a couple of weeks and starting using android apps and havent gone back....that was about 6 months ago and now I only use the apps on all my streaming devices....

Yes, but kodi menu is still greyed out.
Tried diff cables and different screen.
Kinda wondering if anyone here has same box and same issue.

I guess ill have to mess around with more and try a different app and see what it displays as.

Try uninstalling Kodi and reinstalling it from the Play Store. Or try SPMC also in the Play Store, or here http://spmc.semperpax.com/

Back following this thread, as my Tronsmart Prometheus has died after four years. Looking at the Xiaomi Mi, but only see one USB port and no Ethernet port? Would need one of each, as the USB port would be for the airmouse, and the Ethernet would be used for streaming from a Plex server. Would be spending €50-€70 on it, and as it'll be a present, would prefer not to have the person pay tax.

The recommended ethernet dongle has built-in USB ports. Not exactly cheap though: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00LLUEJFU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

What NAS/software are you using, out of interest? I've tried Plex but the NAS I use can't really transcode like Plex wants it to, and I can't find a decent alternative server app for metadata/episode guides etc.

Also, what do you mean RD Integration?

Returning it not worth the hassle - you might end up paying customs on the replacement.

As others have said it could be the power supply - H96 power supplies failed on me.

Before you go off spending a 10er to buy a new power supply, it might be worth running a test to see if the box still works.

You should be able boot the box by putting a usb cable (male to male) in one of the box's usb ports. You will also need to beg/steal/borrow a 2 amp usb charger - tablets often have 2 amp usb chargers.

If the box boots - then you will need a replacement power supply that has a center positive tip. (I think the box issues with a 5v/2.5 amp power supply - but these are harder to come by and 5v/2amp may be all it needs.)

If you are not sure about that then you could simply run it with usb and two amp charger. Or try one of these if you have one https://www.aldi.ie/usb-surge-protected-power-block/p/071816080618100

But i do not get why. Ubuntu would surely be a better option?

At last Wetek are coming out with a new box........... in 2018

    http://www.wetekforums.com/v/discussion/31515/new-box-wetek-2018

    https://androidgeek.pt/wetek-prepara-se-para-lancar-tvbox-com-android-tv
Wetek has partnered with Google, which will allow it to launch a new TV Box with Android TV.

We here at Androidgeek.com are in a position to announce that the Box in question is already in (advanced) testing and should arrive on the market no later than February 2018. However, Wetek is making efforts to make available equipment during the year 2017.

In terms of hardware we do not have much information to make available, but it will be something very similar to Wetek Play 2, but with small and indispensable changes. However, we can guarantee that it will continue with DVB "port" and with a new and redesigned application of WeTV.

Incidentally, WeTV will become the only major concern of Wetek, because with the arrival of AndroidTV, any and all system updates will be provided by Google, leaving Wetek resources more available for what is really important for the company.

I agree jonski, just don't know if i can wait that long... I'm trying to work out if it's worth the wait.

What do we think the new Wetek will have?
DVB - yes, all Free to Air channels with proper channel listing
Kodi - yes 5.1 HDMI audio passthrough, Wetek has helped the kodi/libre elec project so safe to assume latest versions of Kodi/libre elec work fine
      Android TV ->
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=450&v=LMB9B6Z__bM
Netflix app with HD /Dolby licences ->
    https://devices.netflix.com/en/
      the new RTE player app
    https://digitalblog.rte.ie/2017/04/26/rte-announces-plans-to-develop-the-next-generation-rte-player/
Youtube HD given that the GPU/CPU should be able to decode VP9 and not rely solely on software decoding
The usual good software updates afterwards

HD station is the native qnap app I think...

Ubuntu is great but if you want to sit with the remote rather than keyboard mouse then HD station is similar to chromecast, Apple TV etc.

So as a total newbie to this would the mi box be the safest bet?

I've got a Samsung smart TV, Wi-Fi module failed just outside warranty. So thinking of getting a box to get me around this issue

Mostly YouTube, streaming movies off a site I use. It's really the kids TV in the playroom.

I'd like to future proof it a bit if I could. Willing to spend around 50 (would go a bit higher for the right device if recommended)
