Good start to the 2014 season for the Future Classics Series with 17 cars entered and huge variety on the grid with FIAT Uno's, VW Golf GTi's, Peugeot 205 GTi's, FIAT Punto 1400's, an Opel Astra, Vauxhall Chevette, Honda Civic, Toyota Starlet, MG Maestro and a 2 litre Pinto engined Ford Sierra. 15 cars made the starting grid with the MG having a scrutiny issue, that will be dealt with before the next race, and the Sierra blew its engine, again it will be back out in April.
More Uno's, 205's plus a Capri will be out in April with the possibility of a couple of Toyota MR2's appearing as the season unfolds. With fully prepared racing Uno's now changing hands for less than €1,000, see advert below, the Future Classics is probably the lowest cost motor racing available.
One cloud at the weekend was that Ken Byrne had lent his Peugeot 205GTi to a new competitor in the Series, however, it was rolled at the left hand turn at the esses, it's looks repairable and would not bet against it being out at the next meeting.
Well done to Ian Thornton who won yet again, despite having plenty of company at the front, in the what must be the best MK 1 8V VW Golf GTi in the country. Next race in Mondello Park on Sunday April 13th.

Good weekend for the Future Classics series in Mondello with an 18 car grid and really close racing throughout the field. More cars committed for the next round which will see a 20+ car grid with a Ford Sierra, Ford Capri, more Uno's and Punto's and hopefully the return of the MG Maestro. Some interesting arrivals on the grid last weekend including a MK2 Escort which got quicker and quicker as the day went on and a superbly prepared FIAT 128 Coupe, a genuine Future Classic, great to see it out.

From the Future Classics Facebook page, a very special race day on Sunday July 13th for the fledgling series. The races on Sunday in Mondello Park will decide the first winner of the Sean Kelly Memorial Cup named after the late Sean Kelly of Sean Kelly Engineering who was heavily involved in Motor Racing for many years. The Future Classics biggest grid yet will line out with 21 cars already entered.

"SEAN KELLY MEMORIAL CUP RACES. Lads. We have a two day meeting on the 12th & 13th July in Mondello. We will have a race on the Saturday & Sunday and POSSIBLY a race on Sunday morning. We need a big turnout for this meeting so get your entries in ASAP and don't wait til last minute. Entries forms are available from Mondello 045 860200. If you ask them they can send you out all entry forms for remaining race events. Make a big effort for this meeting. We will have a marquee with teas & coffees and want all cars parked together for display"

Sunday October 12th is the last race weekend of the season for the Future Classics Series in Mondello Park. The grids have benn getting bigger and bigger and the organisers of the Series have done a great deal with Mondello for the last race weekend, see below from the Future Classics Facebook page:

The last round of the 2014 season is on October 12th in Mondello. We have been talking to Mondello and they have agreed to 2 races for €250. We need a minimum of 15 drivers for this rate. I need to know by next Friday for definite if you intend to go for the two races. If I don't get 15 definite replies by next Friday 26th we will revert to one race. For our last race of the year could everyone please make a big effort to reply and enter and finish off the year with a good number of cars on the grid for the class. Thanks. Future Classics.

Good to hear, 16 cars is a decent grid with one or two more latecomers surely.

Its tough to fill grids the last few years.

I think half the problem is that there are too many different classes now with 14 or 15 cars each. Years ago there were only a couple of classes, Formula Ford/Atlantic etc.

Mondello grids are getting better though, the Patch Fiestas have around 50 cars now, good grid of ITCC out for Leinster Trophy and really good to see more and more Formula Fords appearing out on track.
The Future Classics have been growing steadily, two dozen different cars have been out this season as yet not all on the same day. The cars are out there just need to be encouraged out.
