    hi guys,
    i started a weeks trial in a new job last week but i was let go after 3 days. the reason being is the owners rule that no mobile phones are allowed to be used in the job.
    my wife is 6 months pregnant so i need to be contactable but when i told the owner i needed to be contactable he said 'get yourself a job that will let you use your phone' and then said lets call it a day so i left.
    he was a really intimidating man and the other staff were literally afraid of him. on sunday i didnt get a break for 9 & a half hours and couldnt drink water because the staff told me he doesnt allow it (the job was in a pub kitchen)

    my question is - can he call time on the trial early just because i asked to be allowed to accept calls? i was never late for the 3 days and my work was of a high standard

    Unfortunately, you can be let go for nearly any reason during a probationary period, once it's not on the grounds of race, gender, age etc.

    Sounds like you did yourself out of a job.. 3 days and no lates? hardly an achievement.

    Lots of jobs don't allow people to carry personal mobile phones. Doesn't stop you from putting it in your pocket on vibrate (once your friends don't keep texting you -maybe a better idea to buy a new sim card for emergencies). Or even being old-fashioned and giving your wife the number of the pub like people did in the days before mobile phones.

    As for the water thing.. sounds like nonsense really, I'm sure there was a tap in the kitchen. And breaks.. often an issue for kitchen staff when there's limited cover but you are entitled to breaks.

    Seems like your better off op, imagine what he'd be like as the due date approached and you had to take days off at a moments notice.
