With satellite, cable and RTÉ, there are no options. You have to pay Sky or NTL or Chorus.

Its only free on the bunny ears.

Of course theres also the outdoor aerial but then the licence man might spot it so its not really free :D

The main problem is English language rights. If RTE was FTA then they would have to pay the US/UK/Oz program makers rights to broadcast to the whole of the British Isles, if not to cover the 200m people in Europe who have English as a first or second language.

RAI and other Italian channels simply encrypt the programs they don't have rights to and let the rest go through. Most of the programming RTE don't have rights to can be seen on other channels anyway so it's a very easy way of doing it.

Course the chances of SKY allowing Irish procduced programs to be broadcast un-encrypted according to the schedule is about the same as a snowball's on a warm day in hell.

Not strictly true, the four terrestrial channels are unscrambled on Chorus in Cork City. But with the quality of the cable in Cork you're better off with the bunny ears. :D

The satellite situation is a disgrace. RTE have signed their souls away to Sky for half nothing - and they're not even on the cheapest Sky package either, they're on the 30 odd euro per month one.

That old chestnut :) Keep forgetting it. Of course its free, as long as the licence fee is paid etc.

asked this before....but why don't RTE simply introduce the same as in the UK and have a free to view card only available to irish subscribers for say 50 euro. Even tie it to the bloody TV licence if they want to....

    Sky couldnt have that

after them giving them free EPG access and encryption why would Sky give viewers access without subscribing to the family package

There's an Ireland-only test on the RTE transponder with the label '9604'. It's showing colour bars.
