Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

4-5-1 id say, coleman at RB, wilson and whelan holding, and Doyle up top on his own.

players involved make no sense in a 4-5-1.

    Emmet Malone on Twitter:
Let's hope the Germans are as busy trying to work out Ireland's formation as the Irish reporters. King left word for the FAI not to tell us.

Id like 352 with Gibson and Wilson holding. Coleman wide right mcgeady wide left and mcarthy behind stokes and long.

With players picked I can't see other than 442 though.

    McGeady ain't playing.

If Stokes and Doyle are both playing - and there's no way we're playing 442 - then surely Stokes is on "the wing". Draw your conclusions from that regarding where everybody else would be.

I see it lining out as follows

    Forde

    Kelly Clark Delaney Wilson

    Coleman Gibson--McCarthy--Whelan Stokes

    Doyle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,579 ✭✭✭prettyboy81

    According to RTE it's 4-2-3-1

This makes sense (sense in this scenario...)

Looks like a 3-5-2, with Coleman and Wilson as wing backs. He wouldn't play Stokes on the wing, McGeady, Pilkington or McClean would be starting if he wanted wingers.

    Coleman winger...??

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 18,300 ✭✭✭✭Seaneh

    Forde

    Kelly
    Clark---Dalaney----Wilson

    Whelan
    Gibson

    Coleman
    McCarthy
    Stokes

    Doyle

    Maybe?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Frankie Lee

Hopefully there will be an emphasis on keeping the ball a bit better with the crowded midfield. The selection of Doyle is a bit strange but if he can recapture his form of 5 years ago it might pay off. He will work hard regardless. If Ireland can keep it level until the last 20 minutes then having the likes of Long, McGeady and Pilkinton with fresh legs to come on will give us an option on the counter. I have concerns over Delaney's pace at centre back but he is as good as what is available and both centre backs are decent on the ball.

    German team looks weak:

Neuer - Lahm, Mertesacker, Boateng, Jansen - Schweinsteiger, Khedira - Kroos, Schürrle Özil - Müller

Looks interesting im just hoping we dont get a mauling to start of the new era

    Wat?
    How does this work?

    Forde

    Coleman---Clark---Dalaney---Kelly

    Wilson
    Gibson

    Whelan
    McCarthy
    Doyle

    Stokes

    According to Tony O'Donoghue:

    Coleman Clark Delaney Kelly
    Gibson Wilson
    Whelan McCarthy Doyle
    Stokes

That team would be comfortablly favourites to win the champions league...

    "Weak" is subjective.

I reckon RTE's version is just a 'best guess' (and not a very good one either - Whelan RAM?). I still think the 352 makes the most sense.

not far off, but i think the formation wouldnt have coleman that far advanced. 4-4-1-1 IMO.

He said King told him. I think he might have been having him on too though.

Dunphy is on great form already!

From the days of being outraged at stubbornly consistent selection to being outraged at random selection. I'm just glad that Ireland is attempting to play something like a midfield.

Could doyle go up front with stokes on the counter with mccarthy moveing over to the left and one of the dms moveing into the middle ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,975 ✭✭✭nkay1985

If it's three at the back, how strong is Kelly as a centre half?

Not sure who will be where to be honest.

I reckon Doyle must have playing like a madman in training to get in. Trying to prove a point to trap maybe.

I reckon it will be a diamond midfield similar to the Italian set up that dealt with Germany in the euros. Unfortunately we don't have a Balotelli or a Pirlo or a world class defence. Stokes in the Diamanti role.

everyone ready for gibson hanging around outside the box for the pull back. every time he's there lurking, waiting to pull the trigger.

I can see him in a Gerrardesque role breaking from Midfileld and shooting on sight. It could work.

thats how I used play fifa when I was sh!t....take shots from absolutely anywhere. Its makes your stats look a bit better and if you attempt 15-20 (?) long rangers your bound to get 1.
