The 14-year-old schoolgirl shot in the head by
Pakistani Taliban, Malala Yousafzai, arrives by
helicopter at a military hospital in Peshawar.
Doctors treating Malala have removed a bullet
from her head. The 14-year-old had received
threats since she spoke out against the Pakistani
Taliban in her hometown of Swat

This kid promotes education and peace. Some taliban members decide to take her life for having these beliefs.

So this is the first time I've noticed a genuine backlash from average people from the region, Pakistan. Protests are happening and people are openly denouncing the taliban movement.

News to me. Reading magazines years ago about the Taliban. They fought the Russian army with some home made junk and a couple of Chinese guns.

To my mind they were butch mountain men. Now they're child murderers.

I could be wrong but I thing they were backed by the US in the days they fought the Russians.

Either way you are quite right in that they are murderers but thankfully that girl did not die.

    She's Muslim too.

Ironically, the meaning of "Taliban" is "students", and here they are trying to murder young girls for seeking an education.

"Our own" lot? They're not "my" own for one. It doesn't change the fact that the Taliban are sick fuks and Ireland is a far, far better place for people to live in than Pakistan.

Anyway, this is horrible stuff - so what if it's not surprising and it's yesterday's news? No need for people to get involved in the thread if they're that unmoved and blasé.

But kite flying and playing drums, seriously!?
In that region, kite flying is very competitive. They attach sharp blades, glass and acid to the strings, the aim is to cut the string of your opponents kite.

Needless to say it's all very lethal. For e.g. 11 people were killed during a festival in 2007 when the ban was temporarily lifted.

They use sharp kite strings that can kill and injure people.

Actually they shot three little girls.

The Pakistani politician Imran Khan described the attack on the radio yesterday ... he said the Taliban gunmen stopped the car in which the girls were being driven home from school. They asked for Malala by name and the girls refused to identify her ... so they shot the three of them.

The sooner these despicable creatures are wiped out, the better.

They won't though. The military calls the shots in Pakistan and they view the Taliban as a strategic asset, giving them influence in Afghanistan and helping them to counter India's presence there.

Unfortunately, they just can't get rid of the murdering medieval scumbags now that they don't want them anymore.

Pakistani government have the resources and man power they should remove the Taliban from existence.

True, what they don't have resources for is all the refugees, that any kind of attack on the Taliban would create. Also, the Taliban would also strike back, like they have already been doing, at major Pakistani population centers, and have attacked the Mosques and Shrines etc of other Muslim groups in retaliation. That solution isn't nearly as easy as you think.

Personally, I liked the idea Juan Cole had. where instead of sending in the military, they should strengthen the local government and local police forces. The locals will have a greater sense of ownership, and know the local area, and be better able to handle the Taliban, if they were given the resources. The Pakistani military are basically a blunt instrument imho.

As others have said some, well ok one or two, of their laws actually were for good.
They clamped down on the opium business at the start as well.
Sadly the bad far outwieghed the good by about 99.9%.

The taliban started in parkistani religious schools rather than in Afghanistan itself ?
It is afaik primarily pashtun tribe and grew out of the religious madrassas in Pakistan.
    Pakistan are responsible for them.
The Mujahideen were the ones backed by the Americans and were not the religious funboys that the Taliban turned out to be.

And they never fought the Soviets since they appeared on the scene after the soviets had left in late 80s early 90s and after the fall of communist Najibullah regime in 1992.
I always remember the scenes where they blasted the sh** out of the UNESCO backed site that were the Bamyan 6th century buddha statues.

Complete tools the lot of them.

That's the way all cruel regimes operate - setting people against each other so that they don't join up against the regime. That German chap (not going to Godwin the thread :D) did it getting people to turn each other in. This country is going that way... social welfare recipients will turn on the private sector who will then turn on the public sector who will point the finger at the church who will blame the government - chaos is coming and The Anti-Enda will Rule! :D:D

I've never clicked the ignore button before. Damn, it feels good.

Well, you'll not see this as you have me on ignore now:

I had thought it was obvious but anyway, my post was sarcastic, about how the media were giving more column inches that day to Coleen Nolan / Jimmy Savile than they were to this little girl who was shot in the head.

Indeed, even this thread died very fast and got little attention compared to the whole Jimmy Savile saga and I was attempting to highlight that by utilizing irony, guess I failed.

Did you really think I was saying "Who cares.." about a child getting shot in the head?

Anyway, that's what my point was :)

At least the poor child is out of that hell hole and is in a bit more of an enlightened society.

The girl's become a bit of a hero in my eyes since hearing about all this, hope she survives.

The contemptible assassination attack carried out on Malala Yousufzai is being squeezed for all the political value that can be taken from it by those who seek to justify the "war on terror".

US drone strikes have killed upwards of 150 children in this campaign.

Where are the multi-page threads and extensive media coverage for each one of these victims?

It's not the first time Malala has been in the media incidentally. She was featured in a BBC documentary at the age of 12 where she was interviewed alongside her father. The following is taken from the interview (via Craig Murray)

Malala: “I want to ba a doctor but my father told me you have to be a politician. But I don’t like politics.”
Father: “My daughter can be better than a doctor.”

I've yet to see her father's choices in pushing a child in to politics - knowing the risks within that culture - questioned by any of the mainstream media.

It's utterly appalling what has happened to her.

At least she has a chance of recovery, unlike the many infants left dead by the good guys.
