not sure about that particular class but if you ring them they're usually very helpful about that stuff

thanks for that - managed to park at the AIB - so all good, there were plenty of spaces along the mardyke rd though..

New changing rooms have opened on the first floor by the squash courts, Very nice indeed! I think they're trying to move most gym users to the first floor so the teams/clubs can use the downstairs changing rooms.

How do people find the staff in the Mardyke?

I find them unfair to be honest, one day I was wearing a three quarter length pants in the pool and the lifeguard asked me nicely to get out as I was not allowed to wear these shorts.

That's fine .. but I see people in the pool most days wearing a three quarter length pants.. and the same lifeguard never says a word to them..

Also when using the gym one day I had no towel and I was asked to leave

When I go to the gym now I always bring a towel and I look around and see people with no towels with them

It's a disgrace.. when my membership is finished I won't be going back to them!!

I have seen a lot of people kicked out for not bringing towels.

It's very well advertised that you need one as well, so I wouldn't really call it unfair. To be honest, I'd be more annoyed if they didn't enforce those rules!

i would agree, but it depends on how it was said. There is a right and wrong way to convey information such as this. Were they rude about it? Or just matter of fact?

Student parking...Park on Mardyke walk...get disk in reception..lasts for 2 hours. Must give Student Card and number plate.

Think the squash courts are frre. Just need to book.

The staff. Quite nice actually from what I see compared to other places.

Firstly, I think that anyone that wears three-quarter lengths shorts are dicks. Simple ass.

Secondly, I have never seen anyone wear them in the pool.

Thirdly, You have to have a towel in there. For health and safety. Every gym has this. A person mightent have to have it in there hand all the time but at least have one with them. You know what I mean.

That is all I have to say.

having worked at a gym before I know how annoying it is to kick people out for not bringing a towel and somedays when there are a lot of people without them u might be getting a little fussy... also somedays were so busy for me that i didnt have time to watch for towel usage or just didnt wanna but up the the discussion again.

Also having worked at a gym before i find the madyke digustingly dirty and really what good does a towel do when nobody puts it under there sweaty ass on the mashines anyway??? :eek:

its the rule to have a towel. they have signs everywhere telling you to bring one. you're meant to wipe down machines with your towel after use. i don't want to sit in your filth

you can't blame the staff for enforcing the rules. i'm pretty sure you tick a box accepting those rules when you join?

next time I see someone in there without a towel I'm going to tell the staff..
for instance I always notice people jogging next to me almost drenched! and no towel.. they must be well in with staff or something

Yuk. Sorry that sounds so vile - moving germs around with your towel and also, contaminating your towel with other peoples germs and then probably wiping your own body with it. If your worried about hygiene, the machines should be washed or sanitized after use.

the practice in the gym i work at was to put your towel onto the seat and then sit on it. but we (the staff) also cleaned all machines a couple of times daily, which i am sure doesnt happen their either. i would be way to bored to sit on one of those chairs my whole shift long....

the seats are sanatized throughout the day by staff. and the idea with the rule is that if everyone did it, then it would work out ok. but people like you won't. also if you're worried about towel contamination just bring another.

either way don't you bring a towel to the gym anyway to dry yourself after your shower? do you not sweat at the gym and think it's unfair that others have to use the machine afterwards with your sweat on it?

These are the rules of the gym. if you don't like them then you shouldn't have agreed to them. and you certainly can't complain when they're enforced

Anyone any idea when the running track will be open again? And why don't they open up the second cardio gym opposite the men's dressing rooms all the time? the other one was packed out tonight when I went in!

i understand in a practical way why they want you to wipe down machine with towel but couldnt it also be a good route to picking up other people germs and infections ?

Normally, anytime before 6pm is okay

after 6 it usually gets packed with students!!

Its not necessarily students - Mardyke has a lot of paying patrons in the evening, when they would be finished work for the evening, they'd go to the gym before heading home

id say go before 3/4 if you can. It is always packed from then on. Most students would be finished at 4. Anytime from 9-2 is usually quiet.

just got out of the Mardyke gym and there was a note on my car to say that I would be fined for where I parked (i parked on the footpath - double yellow lines). It is a local mardyke residents committee who are doing this apparently and the note said that they forward my details to the guards/city council.. and a fine will be posted to me

is this for real? will i get a fine? this is a new thing obviously.. loads park on the park due to such little space..

Yeah, I'd assume so! couple of friends of mine are planning to go as much as they can over the summer, make use of it!!

Do all UCC students have free membership? I thought I read on the website something about €100 for the year?

It's included in the registration and capitation fees you pay at the start of the year, so it's not exactly free membership, but if you're a student you've already paid so might as well use it!

They will, just go up to reception and tell them you don't have your card, and they'll ask for your student number, and maybe your name/d.o.b.

I haven't found my student card since the exams, and I've been there plenty of times

Can you get the guys in the gym to help you create a work-out plan? I heard they do that, but I'm not too sure and honestly i don't wanna go in and ask only to be told that they don't do that.

Yep its not a bother. I went on a strength plan last year. I didn't know any of the equipment or exercises so ya man showed me, grand. You need to make an appointment. Better this week and next than when term starts again,

Yea it's great because you actually start working out effectively then. Before I was just on the treadmill or bike for an hour thinking I was the bomb.

Not the help desk, though they might help you too, but in the gym part. Either the weights area or gym. There are desks there with gym staff looking after the place.

Question, I'm getting the grant for certain and am gonna refuse to pay the fees until it comes through but if I pay the 150€ capitation fee while I be able to use the mardyke?

yeah you should be fine, membership is included in the student capitation which goes to UCC services and a few other things. the fees are separate and will have no impact on gym membership.
