Great :) Did you go to the UCC workshop? I couldn't make it? Did you find it tough to get in to UCC? I thought it was very tough going, had to stay on the ball for the whole year, but i'm (we are) there now :)

Brilliant! I have plenty of questions, most importantly what's the best place to seek work placement, i'm willing to volunteer. Good luck in your last year, we will probably meet at some stage :)

There sure are, only 25 places. 5 are mature and I am so lucky that I am one of them. I presume the other 20 students will be LC students but don't quote that as I'm not certain.

When your talking about work placement do you mean you want to do something extra outside of college ?

the work placement in college is 30 weeks in total - 10 weeks each in 2nd, 3rd and 4th year! you don't have to find these yourself the college assigns you!

I'd love the option of having maybe 1 day a week for voluntary work placement, if you could recommend anywhere. I really want a great cv when i graduate.

But ucc place us that's brilliant:D delighted about that, last year i had to find my own and it took ages! Where did they send you??

    Hey!

I was in Waterford Regional Hospital first time around - it was hand therapy and like acute care on the wards!

Last year I was in Cork working in mental health!

And this year I'm going to the neo-natal ward in CUH! - which is a really specialised placement so kinda nervous!

I was pretty lucky with the location of my placements but some of the girls have been sent to awkward places like Bantry, Thomastown in Kilkenny and that kinda thing.

emmm I know some of us have worked in a nursing home or as carers that kinda thing so you could look for that kinda weekend work. It depends what area your interested in...I've volunteered during the summer at childrens camps because I want more paeds experience. Do you've any idea what area you'd like? You could prob volunteer in any of the areas except maybe mental health.

    :)

That's a great mix, although I don't know what I would think of moving to waterford or kilkienny for ten weeks or how would I pay rent in two places (I rent in the city and live on my own). Have you gone abroad for any placements?? they mentioned this at the interview?

I would love paediatrics too and mental health. I work with a homecare company at the moment, a very good one, and i get great experience but all of the work is with the elderly, no mental health or paediatric experience, so experience with children is what i will need.

Congrats on getting your place Saoirse! :) I also was one of the lucky 5 to get accepted as a mature student for O.T this year so I'm delighted and nervous at the same time! I sent you a PM.

Theres been a lot of probs with people spending loads on placement paying rent in two places or paying loads in petrol or travel. You dont really get much of a say at all where you go y... if there are special circumstances they might accomodate you but it has been a big problem with my class.

I didn't go abroad for any of my placements... for our class all that was offered was going to Cardiff in 4th year... two of my friends are going now. This placement tends to be adult acute/rehab services so to apply that would have to be what you need. But if they mentioned it to you in the interview they might be developing more options to go abroad.

With your own work experience I know a few of us have volunteered with childrens summer camps over the holidays or maybe you could look into paediatric services in the area. I doubt you would get mental health volunteer experience really because of the nature of the service. Its great that you want to get more experience especially in first year because you will have free time this year and next year.. 3rd year gets much harder so you wouldnt want to be taking too much on.

    Hello,

I am planning to study occupational therapy next year. The clinical hours in 4th year are paid like nursing clinical placements

    Thanks in advance
