Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Looks to be clearing from your area now, just heavy showers, check out the Met Eireann Radar where you see red in the showers that is the heavy stuff and likely to have thunder. You can play the radar and see the shower that brought you the thunder and lightning

It's convecting in your area and surrounds, all the lightening today has been breaking over the greater Limerick region.

I see a few more developing cells heading your way right now. There is a lot of potential yet as the cells move over warmer land and rise into thunder clouds.

The greater mass is gone away to your North East.

Been very warm in southern poland again today, storms kicking off here again now. Just had 1 clap of thunder that made the upstairs old wooden windows rattle. Hard trying to get the kids to bed in it.

Why the attitude? No mind reading required, just a bit of common sense. That would tell you since the poster is on an Irish site, he/she is probably in Ireland. A quick glance at the radar would narrow it down a bit further. Add a bit of common courtesy, and voila, a bit more of a discussion and engagement for new users of the weather forum.

YOU might not be a mind reader, but don't speak for anyone else. I don't know who this "we" is, but it's certainly not the entire weather forum.

I personally think its stupid to post about something happening and not say where it is, I recall lots of posters during the recent storms posting about wind doing damage and flooding and no mention of where it was all happening, other posters were constantly asking people to say what location they were in, I am with storm 10 on this, he did come back and reply to the OP, how do you know that other members would not do the same if they saw the post about lightning and no mention of where it was.

A bit of an oversight maybe, but stupid? There are no requirements in the charter that posts about events must be accompanied by the users location. Indeed, why should users be obliged to tell you where they are? If you're that curious, PM them or ask politely. Otherwise, we all have access to the real time radar.

Honestly, a newb who has every right to come on here and ask questions. Labelling these posts as "stupid" or attacking them for our lack of mind-reading ability does the forum no favours. There a plenty of of other members who are capable of a polite "where abouts are ya?"

In fairness Keith, there is nothing more annoying than a "just had a massive rumble of thunder here" or "total whiteout right now here" and not state where "here" is. Such statements should at least by accompanied with the county where it took place. Common sense IMO.

Agreed, but common sense shouldn't be a one way street.

In fairness storm replied to him with the info he requested which he would have done first time had the OP said his location, I cant understand posters who don't give the location of an incident, they don't have to say where they live, a County or a nearby Town or City will do the job

  • Registered Users Posts: 635 ✭✭✭Video

I wrote the post quickly and forgot to include my location, thanks for sticking up for me though keith!

Really well defined ridge and the darkness was just awesome. I was a bit far away to see lightning, but the thunder was loud and clear! :D

Can anyone explain these cells to me ? how do they increase in intensity over land... im just starting to get into a bit of a meteorology hobby and i'm a total n00b... this is from netweather today showing lightning strikes within the past hour

Video , inland convection initiates due to surface heating . The sun heats the ground the the air around it rises . Helps build the cumulus clouds , and if theres instability in the atmosphere then those clouds will rise further and turn into Cumulonimbus clouds :)

It's a complex setup but the main reason is convection, the sun warms up the air near ground level, this air rises and cools one it gets high up. Cold air can't hold as much moisture as warm air so the water vapour condenses to form clouds. If you get strong convection then these clouds become too heavy and basically burst to give heavy showers and thunderstorms. It doesn't really happen in winter but will hopefully be more common from now on

Good convective weather is probably the most exciting weather we get in this country on the rare occasions when all the factors come together, well worth reading up on if you have an interest in it all!

Thunder/heavy downpour near Roches Point in Cork
We were sitting out near the coastline at Ringaskiddy earlier...sun splitting the stones but heard what I thought was some kind of explosion followed by a few more..we then thought it must be thunder to the east as sky was pretty dark over there..did you think it was extremely loud?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,327 ✭✭✭sunbabe08

Had a large thunderstorm here in Rathcormac, power is out and my garden is white with hailstone. Lots of lightning and some epic claps of thunder. Got a bit of it on video on the phone, will try to upload it later when power returns. Currently tethering off my phone and the battery is low, really hope they get the power sorted soon, I'm starving :pac:
