Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I watched the prime time program about prostitution in Ireland on the RTE player.

One thing that struck me was the use of web sites to market the services.

If you owned a small web company and were approached to set up and maintain a site for a pimp would you do it or would you decline because its prostitution?

Do you think the person setting up and maintaining the site is as culpable as the pimp and should be prosecuted or as I said would you view it as ..just business.

Prostitution should be legalised and regulated. Everyone wins. Except the pimps and human trafficers.

Its not the governments business what people do with their money or bodies. Legalise everything I say.

I dont see why it should be a problem, its only a website ffs, I maintain a few for far worse people than 'pimps'

    Really?! Do tell!

In all seriousness, isn't this what In Dublin magazine got into trouble over some years back? Could a web host run into similar problems?

I'd much rather host a website that reunites lost puppies with their owners. :D

Yes, over the counter crack and machine guns, what could go wrong? :D Idealistically I agree with you but realistically some stuff just has too much potential for harm if one single person goes mad, I mean look what happened in Norway.

Prostitution if not already legalised should be legalised (and taxed) fully, but brothels need to stay illegal, as should pimping.

What makes to think the IT people should be any different to all the others involved in the trade? The traffickers, pimps, solicitors, accountants, clients, drivers, landlords and whoever else. Why shouldn't the question be about any or all of those using their skills?

Volenti non fit injuria. If someone consents to something being done to their own body (even by another person), it shouldn't be illegal. That should be one of the primary boundaries of the law.

Similarly, if someone wishes to sell their body for sex, they shouldn't be stopped.

God gave us these gifts, it's not for us to judge who gets use of them or not.

When a mere mortal approaches us to set up a website or configure his network we must oblige for all men are created equal. Their uses are none of our concern, they can't be. We must remain objective in our pursuits and leave emotion at the door. It can be a tiresome task but it's one we bare and embrace.

We are the IT people. We are here to help.

"Have you tried turning it off, and then back on again?"

I see. Your skills are a vocation, learned in monastic isolation on mountaintops with a similar ethical approach as doctors, treat all equally. Fair enough.

That was my point though, everyone involved should be subject to the same standards.

Why didn't you install a system destroying virus that would only manifest itself after about 3 months?

most of them are mac users :D

the real way to play the game is give everyone the same service for different prices, what might cost a hipster 200 euro to have fixed could be 50 euro in the hands of somebody i actually have some iota of respect for

I suppose I may as well say it, as it's always brought up in these threads -

    Prostitution isn't illegal in Ireland.

There is a big difference doing business for someone you dislike or find laughable and doing business for someone who is doing something illegal or something you find repugnant.

Of course everyone involved in the business should face the same tratment.

I am intrigued on how some one would think.. I would nerve be a 'pimp' but its okay to set up a web site or rent an apartment to someone ruining a prostitution business.

but a lot of these people know whats going on, I for instance have no issue with any part of the business, so have no problem with anything from being a pimp to running websites. Id say most people involved have no issue with any of it, but just do the small parts as it all works out for them.

If you have a problem with it then dont do it.

That okay for you as you say you would have no problem being a 'pimp' or doing the website or renting the apartment, but there are people who would run the website and rent them an apartment BUT would not run the prostitution business and would feel that prostitution had noting to do with them!

    Que

Pimps, Brothels and Soliciting in public are illegal.

The act of paying for sex isn't.

I kind of get what you're getting at but I'm not sure I'd agree.

Designing a site for a Pimp is not partaking in the prostitution. You are not pimping the girls out, you're not driving them around, you're not doing whatever else is involved in running prostitutes.

You provide a service. They pay for the service. The service ends.

It's like saying someone who sells a car to a drug dealer is partaking in drug dealing. He's not, he's just selling a car.

Criminalising it in Sweden doesn't seem to have worked if the Escort-Sweden website is anything to go by.

So far public debate has been very much one-sided. For a truly balanced view of the business, RTE should do another hour long special on the women who are genuinely working as independents.
