Hi Guys, ditching Sky in the new year and trying to source a suitable replacement. From my limited knowledge/research I have managed to realise I need a Linux box, as I want a 7 day EPG guide and series link for both Satellite and Saorview Channels.

My other main requirement is to be able to watch/control channels from another 2 tvs,(currently use the RF+ on the sky box). No box seems to be able to do this as far as I can tell, so I assume I also need a Trilink box also?

Would the Amiko (http://www.freetv.ie/amiko-alien-2.html) or the technomate (https://www.satellitetv.ie/Saorview_Combo_Receiver/technomate-tm-nano-3t-combo) suit me? I like the idea of a triple tuner, or even a twin Sat and Twin Saorview if possible?

New to the whole idea of these boxes, but used to messing with ROMS on Tablets, phones etc, so would be interested in upskilling.

Thanks for any advice/help you might have for me, and Happy Christmas.:D

    Thanks,

They are pricey, but seem to be excellent. But as far as I can tell they don't work with saorview?

Got my new Vu+ Zero in the last few days:

Excellent box for the price, fast as hell no matter what I've thrown at it, ~130 euros delivered from Germany. Streaming using OpenWebIf works seamlessly.

One thing you need to be careful of is getting USB WiFi and DVB-T sticks that are compatible with whatever you'll be running on the Zero.

If you want multiple tuners though it might be better to go for one of the higher end Vu+ models.

Yep the Amiko Alien 2+ is a great box
Triple tuner (2 satelite and 1 terrestial ( saorview )
    7day epg ( sat & saorview )

plug in a usb hard drive and you can pause and record also theres auto timer a bit like series link but obviously not as good
If the program is on same time every week auto timer will keep recording at that time every week till you tell it not to

    Dual boot Spark or enigma2

No RF out so cant easily send it to another tv but you can stream to pc or tablet
    A trilink would be required
Or what I did was buy a cubieboard ( mini android pc) and it has hdmi out and streams from AA2 to tv in kitchen & you can watch same or different chanell or stuff that you recorded
A raspberry pi will also do same thing

    AA2 thread is here

i bought the triax combo boxes and use a 2tb external hard drive for my irish stations and indoor aerial ,sat cable not plugged in yet but is there if i need recording on bbc1hd on sat,as the duo or solo2 are busy elsewhere recordings.does other tv have a browser enter ip of vu box and it shows what on other tv.independent viewing is better as each room is not stuck watching same thing.

    Thanks for the info.

I do have a Raspberry Pi, but I need a system to be easy as Sky for Mrs Q to use. Are the Trilink boxes good? or fiddly? I know the Technomate box has RF out(but doesn't have Scart -so Trilink not an option) but not sure if it is powered to allow the use of the Magic Eyes? anyone able to confirm?

    Sounds good
The Vu boxes a a little pricey but no doubt much better build
where as the AA2 can be had now for €135
    The triax
How do you find the triax combi ? any good
The triax i was looking at on tvtrade was a single sat input +
It is saorview approved though which means the teletext will work
Theres also a sab unix triple very similar to AA2 for €138 on that site

Maybe something like this would work
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Global-F140-compatible-magic-amplifier/dp/B000NG2RUC
    uses seprate power supply
