    I'm looking at a number of solutions for remediating the decayed bearing end of several large timber trusses (7m span) in a protected structure, pending a full inspection by a timber specialist. In most cases, decay has extend 200mm beyond the bearing.

    The trusses will be visible from ground floor, so I'm looking at solutions which are aesthetically acceptable. I think a timber splice, steel splice plate or a resin bonded detail are best suited (subject to full design). I've never used resin bonded timbers ( hidden bars) before, and I am wary of possible issues with the application and durability of the resin. The building has low occupancy. I'm favouring the timber splice detail because its in keeping with traditional timber connections. A steel splice is probably more robust, and is my second preference if timber splicing is troublesome (design and cost).

    I'm interested in hearing any thoughts on the above, arguments FOR or AGAINST a particular solution

    In structures that have to keep the existing timber and where it's else's, I like seeing steel plates at the bearing end. It's a kind of "look at me, I'm keeping the roof up" kinda thing.

    Personal preference though, from an visual point of view.
