Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi again
Has anyone from the RPO 2008 received an email from the PASO about filling grade 3 positions ?

Apparently the panel we are on at the minute is due to expire soon , personally i've no interest in a grade 3 pen pushing job (no disrespect to anyone in that position) but its not for me

However i am a little disappointed that they would finish the current panel whilst the selection process had not been completed
I know that the IPS have no control over this , i'm not sure if i would have made it as far as being offered a job, but if it is the case i'm disappointed for those candidates who are above me on the recruitment panel

Just to clarify, have you received an email from the IPS saying that because you're on the panel for PO you are now being offered the chance to apply for PASO, or are you just speculating?

i have received an email stating that they were contacting individuals who had reached the final stages of RPO but had not been offered a position
it also said should you be appointed to PASO you may be considered for RPO when the IPS seek to fill vacancies in the future

    That's daft.

The public service PASO grades should be used to allow public servants see out their service and ultimately be replaced by cheaper civilians.

But have you seen the PASO salaries!?
They're not in anyway on a lower rate.

Yeah, in the case of most of them they got to carry over their salaries from before, and we saw on Iris last month, competition for Paso 1 competition was up for about €68k at the time.

It comes across as very unfair to have to undergo another interview after already passing the RPO interview etc.

Your basically going from almost starting a job to applying again with no guarantees.

This is the prison service, fair doesn't come into it.

In fairness though, it's not exclusive to IPS.

Public service recruitment panels do have a three year expiry.
AGS is the same, Fire Brigade aswel.

I guess it stands to reason that alot can change in the time since you passed first time around.

Considering they are taking PASO's off the current Officers panel, I don't think we'll ever see a PO recruited again. They have gotten yellow packs, just by a different way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

Well, it's that time of year again.
There are RUMOURS of an intake in March

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 680 ✭✭✭Salmon

    Does intake = more PASOs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

    HAHAH yeah, more yellow pack.

IS there any sign of a recruitment drive? The father is a Po but doesn't want me to go into the job, but I had always planned to go into the army then become a PO but I am green colour deficient so the army is a no go

seems to be no talk of recruitment. in another 2 years there could be a massive amount of retirements ,as a huge amount of current staff joined in 86/87 I estimate up to 40% of staff could go , in the current financial climate i dont envisage that huge amounts will go as they wont be able to afford it but im sure some will. remember that new staff are coming into the job under new rules .. less pay more work .

Hi, just wondering if any prison officers could let me know how long guys are usually in the job before they can be transferred to the escort fleet?? Thank you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 502 ✭✭✭bazzamac

All depends on what part of the country your looking to go to to.it takes longer to get to limerick than say to cloverhill escort corp.

    Entirely moot.

They host an aptitude test to form a panel of potential recruits and then call them up as they need them. Your position on the panel depends on your performance in the test.

The numbers on the panels can get into the thousands and they may summon a few dozen.

  • Registered Users Posts: 67 ✭✭Redzer99

So is it just one aptitude test then an interview or what way does it work?

Unless they've added anything new since the last time..
Aptitude test -> written submission -> interview -> fitness test.

All the details will be posted up with the advisement.

Hi, does anybody know if many people are turned down at the medical for poor eyesight? The guidelines are: have a distant visual acuity uncorrected, of no less than 6/36 in each eye tested separately, corrected to 6/12 in each eye tested separately .

So, if you make it past the exam and interview, can you be turned down here if you need glasses or contact lenses to see properly?

Or, so long as you do not have any other problems with your vision, do they just instruct you to wear contact lenses/gasses for the job?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 502 ✭✭✭bazzamac

Plenty of recruits were glasses throughout training and if successful continue to wear them during their shifts.

What is the vetting process to become a prison officer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 502 ✭✭✭bazzamac

if you pass the written exams, you have to be garda cleared(no previous convictions} and then take a medical.

Prison Administrative Support Officer. Clerical support in general office/stores. Uniformed, minimal contact with offenders, relatively low paid, awkward rostering, high turnover. Should be a few threads running with regard to same or see Publicjobs.ie

Recruitment of RPOs should begin later this year. Diminished terms of employment are still being thrashed out.

Fellas (and girls)...the reality is that membership of certain organisations (nothing to do with rehabilitation) will undoubtedly open doors for you. That's how it works guys. In most other jobs, your educational qualifications will help further your career.
Now....let's look at the qualifications of prison management.......
