This is my Blacknight shared hosting wishlist for 2016:
    • MySQL 5.5 or higher
    • PHP 5.6.15
    • Any caching engine (memcached, APC, Zend, OPCode, XCache, Varnish, Redis)
    • InnoDB engine as default database engine

    Happy Holidays!

One more item on my list (I can't edit my post for some reason):
    • DNSSEC support
    • [UPDATE] PHP 5.6.16

Sorry for the lack of a reply
I've asked our technical team to look into the various items and we will update you either here or via our blog etc., with any changes

    Addressing your specific "asks":
[*]MySQL 5.5 or higher - we are working on that. Our technical team have been focussed on migrating a number of "legacy" hardware nodes to more up to date OS so that we can access some new features / functions that will allow us to offer various services
[*]PHP 5.6.15 - not sure on the exact timeline, but that's planned.
[*]Any caching engine (memcached, APC, Zend, OPCode, XCache, Varnish, Redis) - that's unlikely to be available on our shared hosting
[*]InnoDB engine as default database engine - I'll check with our CTO on that one.
[*]DNSSEC support - we're reliant on our main software vendor to either support this directly or via some kind of sane integration with 3rd party vendors

Hey, thanks for your reply. It's nice to hear you're working on it.

Hopefully, new features and updates will be available soon!

If you're doing a lot of heavier PHP development and want to use more "bleeding edge" releases we'd recommend one of our cloud hosting plans.
Or you could have a look at this: https://www.blacknight.com/jelastic/

One of the issues we have in a "shared" environment is that newer versions of various software will cause issues for clients with older scripts / software.

I know, but it's not time for me to upgrade now, I'm still small.

Let me add three new items to my list ;)

Jelastic looks nice, I'll take an in-depth look later.

PHP 7 won't be available for some time - it was only released yesterday
Newer versions of Apache are made available as possible with the various OS versions we use etc.,

    One can only hope...

I was playing with PHP 7.0.0 final today on Digital Ocean and also noticed Register365 has PHP 7 on their shared plans. I know it's still young and immature, but lots of old versions need to go. PHP 5.3 and 5.4 are past their end of life.

    Anyway, Happy Holidays!

    Hello and Happy New Year!

Here's the revised wishlist for sharing hosting plans:
    • Apache 2.4.18 (with mod_http2 built in // mod_http2 is the renamed mod_h2 module)
    • HTTP/2 support
    • nginx 1.8+
    • MySQL 5.5 or higher
    • InnoDB engine as default database engine
    • PHP 5.6.17
    • PHP 7.0.2 (optional)
    • Any caching engine (memcached, APC, Zend, OPCode, XCache, Varnish, Redis) (optional)
    • DNSSEC support
    • https://letsencrypt.org/ support
    • CloudFlare Plesk support

    Cheers!

    Hello!

Are there any updates regarding any of the items in the list? PHP is now at 5.6.18 and 7.0.3 respectively. Also MySQL 5.1 is past end of life - almost 3 years now - https://blog.cpanel.com/mysql-5-1-end-of-life/

I would be happy with an Apache/PHP/MySQL update only.

    Cheers!

    Hi Ethan,

PHP 5.6.13 is available on our latest shared hosting plans.

MySQL 5.5 is not currently available on shared hosting, we are pushing the vendor but at present we don't have an ETA.

Can I have a link to the vendor software?

    Hi Ethan,

It is Shared Web Hosting Next Generation module from Odin Service Automation

Thank you, I'll try to contact them via their forum.

    Hi Ethan,

MySQL 5.5 is now available on shared hosting, any new databases created will be MySQL 5.5 and all existing databases on NG Shared are now MySQL 5.5

Hi Alan, I have noticed yesterday. Also, PHP seems to be at its latest 5 version, 5.6.18. Waiting for PHP 7 now ;)

I suppose Odin updated their software?

    Thank you!

We found a solution which they support, I'll investigate PHP 7 on NG Shared.

It's now November, and I'm disapppointed that we are still waiting on two features that are standard with most reputable hosts. Have to count, but I believe we have triple digit clients hosted with Blacknight, and have been using your services for 10 years+. Have to say, I'm tempted to favour our reseller provides who provide these features:

    1) Letsencrypt - I know you want to sell a dedicated IP address and an SSL cert. You'll still sell some, but Google have added ssl as a ranking factor - we need https by default - please integrate letsencrypt.
    2) Up to date mysql  on legacy accounts - I have to jump through hoops to convert a modern database collation to an old one, just so I can move my dev wordpress sites to your hosting, for legacy clients. I was told last year that all accounts would be migrated to NG by end of year, yet as late as today I'm dealing with a legacy account that can't handle a collation that's been available for years on mysql.

That said - your support generally rocks. That's why I host most of our clients with you.

    Hi SBS

Letsencrypt can be used on our latest NG Shared Hosting plans, we don't officially support the installation and configuration of it but it is possible to use it. Also you don't need a dedicated IP for SSL certs on latest NG Shared Hosting plans as it supports SNI.

On all shared hosting plans (including legacy) any new MySQL  Database is 5.5

Our Vendors migration path doesn't support mass migrations but any account can be migrated to our latest NG Shared Hosting, just need to open a support request.

    Hi Seapoint,

We recommend you use our approved SSL product, which we support. https://www.blacknight.com/security/ssl/

However, if you want to DIY install a Letsencrypt on shared hosting, please read this https://help.blacknight.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000407965-Using-Let-s-Encrypt-SSL-Certificates-on-Shared-Hosting

Please be advised that self-installed SSL certs will not automatically renew on shared hosting plans, so you will need to keep an eye on that yourself.

    Shell access is not available on shared hosting plans. Our cloud hosting plans offer an ideal solution if you need complete control of your own dedicated virtual machine. https://www.blacknight.com/cloud-hosting/;

Hope this helps - please let me know if you need anything else.

    Regards,
    Conn
