Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. * Cool, theres discussion allowed *

    Nice setup Murray..

I'm really liking the look of that 9800GX2 how do you find it? Im thinking of getting one but im not really sure, that or a gtx280..

How high can you play crysis on that screen, im assuming your on 1680 x 1050? My ghetto 8600GTS isn't doing it for me anymore..

HolySHIIT Murray, nice rig man, I wish I had that pc.

Tis a beast alright. But if i were you i would disconnect the 2 fans closest to the door hinge. That case is known for heat buildup as there is more air comming in then there is going out (air gets warm when it sits there ) You will probably notice your temps drop a fair bit.

  • Registered Users Posts: 131 ✭✭Spiritine

    thanks guys

aye tx manties....see in the pic where u see the sidefans door open, i have the bottom rear one on the side faced backways, pumping air out :P, at the exhaust of the gfx card, if u put ur hand up to it, u can feel hot air coming out, and that part of the frame of the case is quite warm lmao...the one above is it pumping in on top of the cpu cooler...i tought this would help pump air through the cpu cooler better, RealTemp shows the cpu running @ between 35 & 40 degrees at idle and around 50/55 under 100 load wit everest test

techguy, yes the 9800GX2 is a savage card =), on cod4 with max settings and on 1680x1050, your talking about 200fps solid, it goes as far as 500 walking about in some maps, if you set it on 125max fps which your supposed to for some servers, it will never drop, will even sit solid on 150, but 125 is loads,

Crysis, Dosnt get the same kinda fps as cod4 in this lol, With 1680x1050 and everything on very high, your talking about 40-60fps, the first level isnt as good for some reason, get as low as 10, average 15 on it. its poor, (on full settings) Ill have to go play again and check, maybe i could have done with a reboot at the time, because it was running fierce well one night there, hardly ever play it, stuck on a lvl and it pissed me off lol, havnt tryd the multiplayer yet lol

The new GTX280 is supposed to be better, Its only 1 GPU instead of 2, the 9800gx2 even thou its 1 card, it is like sli, u even get that sli kicking in flicker when u go in cod4 (cod4 utalises sli) not many games do i think

If your looking to play crysis smoothly at full spec, i hear this new ati 4870X2 is supposed to run away with it

Cant wait for farcry 2 to come out, its coming out shortly, wonder will it be as greedy as crysis??

I recently upgraded from 2GB of Ram to 4GB, So its only coming up as 3.50GB? I've heard different reasons for it...And no solid ones...

I'm planning on getting the newest graphics card, But I'm unsure what to get.

Windows xp 32bit and any other 32bit OS can only address the first 3.5GB(ish) of ram. To see anymore then that you will need a 64bit operating system.

Yeah i was reading up about that, So i might get Vista 64 bit.

how come komplett dosnt have 9800gx2's anymore?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,234 ✭✭✭techguy

Thanks for the detailed reply Murray,

I think im gonna go for the 9800gx2 as I dont have an nForce board.. I've only been playing crysis, got the new one too and it rocks only the aliens came really early which pisses me off big time! I'd settle for 40-60 fps.. im currently playing at about 20 and think its fine..:o

Will it produce much heat? I shall post pics of my setup and you guys can help me improve its cooling..

  • Registered Users Posts: 131 ✭✭Spiritine

It does run fairly hot yes....Youd want fans taking the air out or it would prob heat your case up lmao

Dont take my word for 40-60fps now.... As i said, it goes as low as 10, I changed my hard drive last week so i cant get playing the higher levels i got onto which seemed to run smooth, also the processor i have might be helping me with it running as good as it does for me.....its pretty expensive one, but u might be fine....
Also if im not mistaken, i think you can run the ati cards on nforce board (only 1 at a time, like cant run crossfire/sli wit em), what is your board and we can check

I dont want to put you in the wrond direction...Just tell ya that for how much money i spent on this comp, Crysis dosnt impress me that much still lol, a guy i know over the internet got the 4870x2 and he said it runs crysis soo smooth

What kinda pc is yours anyway, did you build it yourself or is it a dell or sumtin?, Gotta be sure the card will work with it too....origionally i bought the 9800GX2 for my dell dimension 9100....(dell tech said it would work) so i got it and it wouldnt work on it with the power supply its on now in new pc, (one in the 9100 was only 375w)
Thats how i ended up getting broke / building this pc now lol

Maybe ill sell u my gx2 and ill try out a 4870x2:D
by the way, what kind of card are you using at the minute?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,694 ✭✭✭Dingatron

Thought I may as well throw mine up.

Its been a while since I've done a build as my previous machine was an XP3800 @ 2.6 GHz, 2GB Geil value ram, DFI nF4 SLI-D, 7950 GX2,Hiper Type R580w load of fans etc. It was a noisy machine but served me well.

Anyway on to the new. :D

    dsc00174yy1.jpg

    dsc00175ui4.jpg

Emphasis for this build is quietness for general use but also the power for when I need it for playing games, encoding etc.

    Specs
    Antec P182
4096MB-Kit OCZ PC2-6400 ReaperX HPC Enhanced Bandwidth, CL4
    ASUS P5Q Deluxe
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
    Club3D HD4870 1024MB
    Corsair 620W
    Samsung F1 1TB 32MB SATA II
    Thermalright IFX-14
and a few Scythe S-Flex fans.

    dsc00176fx7.jpg

    dsc00177yn3.jpg

That IFX-14 is a monster. Too big in fact as I had awful trouble fitting it. I had to put the Scyte fan through the centre in the end as it was interfering with the memory slots and also had to modify (bend :( ) the back-side dual heatpipe heatsink at the top to fit it in the case properly. Anyway its a great cooler despite all that. The 4 cores are low 30's at stock.

    dsc00178xu1.jpg

Build complete. Pictures don't do the wiring justice. The P182 case allows for most of the cables to be routed around the back of the main board. The ATX12V 8-4 pin from the Cosair 620 barely fit around the back but tbh the placing of it on the P5Q is in crazy position imo.

    dsc00186tm8.th.jpg

Anyway that's it and it is whisper quite in normal use. Even after a few bench marks using 3dmark 06 (14400's) and an hour of COD4 the 4870 fan was only reaching a fan speed of 1200 rpm. I hope to clock the cpu up to around 3.4 Ghz depending on temps etc.

Nice. Did you get a monitor in it for that price? Also love that ram, looks fooking evil so it does.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,694 ✭✭✭Dingatron

Thanks. The monitor is a 22' V7 which I have had for a while. Was a bargin at the time and although its not a well know brand it does the job and have had no issues with it. Ram is nice. Runs stock at 4-4-3-15 timings at 2.1 V. The heat sinks mean you can't have 2 modules side by side though but 4 Gb should be plenty for me for a while. Should be good for when I clock the CPU.

Actually think the case is a big small. the i7 is that fricking big inside.

cabling was a bit of a problem; I dont have the hdd case fans powered on as a result.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,234 ✭✭✭techguy

Ah, now I remember..people said it was a tad bit small and that things were tight..

Are you using the stock cooler on that?

    yeah, stock cooler.

it's running @ 145*20 which is up from the 130 stock fsb and temps are solid so far.

i think I'm going to have to p95 it again when I get home..error checking I dont think was enabled when I started it last night :embarressed:

I had my 920 @ 3.2 on the stock and it didn't like it at all for long.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,042 ✭✭✭allen175

Well when it goes up to 3.6GHz under load the temps are 60-70c, idle its 40-50. The voltage is 1.25 VCore and auto on the rest. http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=486720

Yeah i do computer Science too aswell as game. I am repeating 3 modules from 1st year atm, so i have plenty of time on my hands.

While I do have a computer that would be/was a good gaming rig, when I bought it. I run Linux and don't play many games though, although I have been playing back through GTA San Andreas in Wine lately :)

    I Have:

Intel D975XBX Motherboard, which has gigabit, firewire, and a 2.93 Core 2 Duo processor.

512 Nvidia PCI Express 7900 GTX Video Card

    400 gig hard drive

And of course two monitors, once you go double, you won't go back.

When I bought my case, I went off the picture, while completely failing to read the dimensions, so I have a humongous silver computer case, with annoying blue blinking fan light (never got around to changing it.)
